My M4204 does the same thing. I've only had it for a month. Turn it on and it's initializing, hook it up to the computer and it's not recognizing it in the F drive. Now it's dead, so I can't even charge it. I hooked it up to my phone charger and the lights will come on the player, but it won’t charge it. I think RCA just came out with a really bad product!!

I have the same problem. I just bought this piece of junk before deploying and it worked for about 1 week; just long enough to put all my music on, but not long enough to enjoy. Now I have about 2GB of songs on it and cannot listen to any of it. Another piece of junk from Wal-Mart?

Player stays in the initializing stage and does nothing more. My computer does not recognize this player as an added new device anymore. This device is not recognized by Mycomputer. Please help, I just recently purchased this product.

I have had the same problem with getting stuck in initializing/then not turning on/drive not being recognized on the pc. Returned one for exchange and after a couple of weeks - same thing. I have found that my pc at home was not charging my player because when I plugged it into my car charger or my pc at work it started charging and once I got a full charge I was able to go in and reinstall the firmware. Also once I went through and downloaded the firmware update it started working again (I have my music saved on my pc now as a backup). It did it again when my battery got low, so I have not had any problems if I keep the battery charged to a full charge except it will randomly delete my favorites folder... I do use the RCA Easy Rip software to check for firmware updates now.

Fatal error on RCA Opal:
What do I do if I experience a Fatal Error? How Do I reset my Opal?
The Opal has a reset hole on the back of the unit in which a toothpick (non metallic) can be inserted to reboot the player. If this does not work, I suggest that you reformat the player by using the Windows format command on the unit. To reformat the memory:
Right click on the device within the Explorer or My Computer window
Select the format command (full format) to reformat the internal memory of the device.
Reinstall the firmware from

RCA Opal - Stuck on "Initializing"

Go to this website to reload the firmware:*&p_li=&p_topview=1

Note: websites are subject to change - if you go to and go to the page for the RCA Opal m series, you can also find the firmware reload on that page.

How to i play videos on a RCA M4204

Log onto the RCA website and download the RCA SMV Video Converter. The Opal only plays videos that are in one specific format. This converter will put your videos into that exact format (see Resources below).
Install the RCA SMV Video Converter once you have downloaded the software.
Open the RCA SMV Video Converter software to begin putting videos onto your RCA Opal.
Connect the RCA Opal to your computer using the USB chord that came with the device.
Wait until the RCA SMV Video Converter software reads that the device has been connected. You will know this when the bottom of the software screen reads “Player Detected: Opal 1GB 2GB.”
Select the “Browse” option to find any videos that are on your computer which you wish to add to the RCA Opal.
Click the box next to “Transfer output files to OPAL 1GB 2GB after conversion is complete” after you have selected all of the videos which you wish to convert. This will automatically add the videos to your RCA Opal after they have been converted.
Click the “Convert” box after you have selected all of the videos. The videos will automatically begin to convert to the correct format. Once they have been converted, your videos will automatically upload to your RCA Opal.

Turns on but nothing else

memory corupt needs to be reset and your going need to use a compter to do this. Format the memory inside the unit then put the songs back on that should help you with your problem if not the memory inside is no good anymore and has failed.

There are ways to work around the easy rip.
If its mp3's you want on it you can drag and drop them into the opal folder.
If you want smv video files you need to. you need two programs.
1st program is (free program)
It lets you change all video formats to mpeg is the setting I like then after its an mpeg.
