Rv Roof top ac unit

My ac unit will come on and cool fine for a few mins then something happens to it causing it to create a draw on the electrical system. when this happens, it does not cool and the fan runs maybee half the speed. any ideas to what the problem might be?

I HAVE DOMETIC DUO-THERM PENGUIN ROOF AIR CONDITIONING ON RV. THE UNIT WILL RUN WHEN PLUGGED INTO ELECTRICITY BUT WHEN GENERATOR POWERED THE AC UNIT KILLS THE GENERATOR ENGINE. WHAT COULD IT BE?

What size & type generator? On start up the AC unit can draw as much as 17-18 amps in some cases, and if your generator is not designed for a quick draw like that it will die.

I have a dometic duo therm rooftop a/c on my camper. On initial startup, the unit performs fine and cools until it reaches the setpoint of the thermostat. A few minutes later though after the thermostat...

Possible capacitor, but I'd check what else may be drawing power at same time in trailer. Try running everything possible on propane rather than hydro so that there is no other, or minimal current draw besides AC, and see if that makes a difference. Not uncommon in some parks, for voltage to drop when everyone using all their power as well, and the more things that draw your voltage down, before AC kicks on, will cause a higher amperage draw.
If your hooked to an extension cord as well, that will cause higher amperage draw as well, if cord not heavy enough, or too long. Try shutting everything else off, that would draw hydro, temporarily when you restart AC, just to see what happens, and let me know.

How difficult / expensive is it to install a heat strip in a Dometic roof top AC? The unit I have has a mark on the knob for heat, but I suspect it was never installed.

Fairly easy. The only thing that you must figure out is how many amps the heat strips will draw. Make sure the fuses and the breaker switch can handle them. And be aware your electric bills will shoot up.

Relay (?) sticking Dometic RV rooftop AC

Go up on the roof of the unit and remove the AC Shroud. With the unit running, see if you can pinpoint where the sound is coming from. The only thing on the entire AC that would make that much of a vibration would be the fan motor. Not sure what would cause the fan motor to do this. The compressor may do that but only if the windings are bad and then it would not be cooling.
