Typically you take the two sides off. Take the two screws from each side of the DVD player (4 machine screws in all). Slide the player forward toward the front until you have enough space. You may have to disconnect the cables.

After a memory upgrade my dell dimension 3100 frequently shuts down whilst browsing then restarts

Test your PSU power supply unit or replace it if your power supply units fan is not working your PSU is faulty

One bad lead can cause a computer to continue on a cycle of restarting or to shutdown or fail to detect/ boot up a computer hard drive

Test all leads that attach to your hard drive power and data cables IDE SATA

the leads from your MOTHERBOARD TO YOUR HARD DRIVE make sure they have a secure dust free connections and are not faulty or just replace them they could be faulty

make sure all leads that are attached to your drives dvd\cd 3 1/2 inch floppy have secure connections and are not faulty even the electrical extensions or just replace them they could be faulty a computer needs its connections to continue its cycle and have an end so any faulty leads will end up with a computer error

even something as small as a faulty electrical or fan lead can cause you problems

computers need all of the data and electrical current to travel through every working device and to have an end to be able work properly

motherboard and a hard drive any leads between them will fail before your motherboard or your hard drive if its a flat ribbon 40 pin type IDE replace it this will be the first to fail

check all electrical power input and extensions make sure they are securely seated even the cd/dvd floppy drives need to have current go through make sure these drives are working

also check the Cmos battery and computer RAM modules make sure they are securely seated with no dust built up or in the sockets on some motherboards cmos batteries are soldered in
check you CPU central processing unit make sure its securely seated and has thermal paste it might be getting to hot

hope this helps

Want to upgrade memory. will I lose my existing memory

I assume you are upgrading the RAM (Random Access Memory), the Ram is also called a memory stick because it looks like a stick, the stored data is kept on the Hard Drive, if that is upgraded then yes you will loose the memory, but not if you upgrade the Ram

My computer have only 190 MB RAm. it's work very slowly. What I can do to upgrade ? And my DVD drive can't read any disk.

In reality you have a stick of 256 MB DDR memory. You are seeing just 190 because the rest is reserved to the video chip.
To upgrade it is dead easy: just buy another DDR memory stick (preferably a 1 GB one) and insert it next to the one you have now.
If your dvd can't read any disks then it has died , replace it, it's a cheap part.

My HP a420n won't start after replacing cd-rw drive

Please try to remove all the connections from your computer and also connections inside the motherboard, the power cord for your hard drives and also the power cord from the power supply to your motherboard. After that, remove the memory and clean the pin by using an eraser of the pencil. And then insert again the memory stick and connect all the connections from the power supply to motherboard and everything. Lastly reset your bios and put it back to normal again. Hope this would help. Thanks..

I want to upgrade the RAM, and when I opened the desktop the dvd is positioned over the memory slots. I CANNOT FIGURE OUT HOW TO REMOVE THE DVD TO SWOP OUT THE RAM

see if there the motherboard is secured onto a rack that can slide out of the casing. most newer computers have this feature. if not, you will have to unscrew the dvd drive from the casing to get to memory slots. unplug the drive, find the mounting screws, and remove the drive. remember to plug everything back up (power, interface cable, digital cable if present).

good luck.

How do i remove the dvd from an hp s3100n desktop.

You need to take the cover off the computer on both sides. Normally the optical drive is secured by four screws, two on the left and two on the right. Take those screws out and slide the drive forward enough to get to your memory stick. You may not have to unplug the cables, but if you can't slide it out far enough you will.

Can't access the mother board

Remove the left side panel of the computer (front facing you). After that you will see a quick release located at the top, off center slightly. That releases the lock for the drive carriage (Dvd, cd, hard drive, floppy). Pull the small metal piece towards you (left side of cpu facing you), and slide the whole carriage towards the front of the cpu. This will give you enough room to install another pc100 stick onto the motherboard. Install while off and unplugged, make sure it sits correctly and the white tabs on top and bottom snap in, reboot and bios should show upgrade.
