Question about Maytag SkyBox MBV1976A Beverage Dispenser

5 Answers

Stopped cooling. My unit does not appear to be cycling at all, as others on this board have mentioned. I get no motor sounds at all. There is power (lights work) just no compressor noises at all. Any ideas? A service manual would also be an excellent help. Thanks for whatever you can suggest.

One other comment about my unit - the fan appears to be running. At least that what it sounds like.

I just replaced my in-pieces starter relay and thermal switch.

Note I had the same symptoms as other posts of the compressor turning on/off continuously (but no cooling)...I believe what was happening is that the starter relay would allow current to flow to initially start the compressor, but would never stop providing current to it after it had already started (as it should) thus in a few seconds the thermal switch would sense this and trip / remove power to the compressor...then this cycle would start all over once the thermal switch cooled down again and let power back to the compressor...

This kit is evidently the newer style of what is on the original Skybox compressors (functionally speaking)...the new starter relay looks and installs like the old one, but the thermal switch is different and you need to remove the old one (follow the black wire on the top post of the compressor back a little to a small black round thing with a flexible metal piece inside). The good news is that once you remove it, it already has the correct spade lug on the wire to plug directly into the new thermal switch which sits right on the top lug of the compressor above the starter relay.

Note I'm not a service tech, just a Skybox owner who was/is tired of Maytag disowning this product and calling it a "throwaway" when any part of it stops working (and all local authorized service centers laughing when asked to repair one).

Continuing on with my rant a little, I also see other posts on the internet which also state "throwaway" when you actually have a bad compressor because you can't get direct replacements anymore - my friend who does AC work on the side said he most certainly could put another compressor in there from probably just about any other mini-fridge...he just noted that it is a small place to do it so the replacement compressor form factor will have to be considered. He stated you may get a little more or less cooling efficieny but who cares if you really want to keep your machine working that you can't buy anymore (nor get a close alternative).

If it is not cycling and there is notpower at all check the power cord and socket.
    If it stopped completely:
    "First,
check to see if the light comes on or if there is any fan, motor, or
other sound coming from the appliance? If so, the refrigerator isn't
really completely stopped--go to the specific problem you are having.
If not, try adjusting the thermostat to a colder setting. If that
    doesn't work, read on.

Second, check to see if there is power
getting to the refrigerator. To do that, plug a lamp or other device
into the same outlet the refrigerator is plugged into. If there's no
power, check the fuses or circuit breakers. If the fuses or breakers
aren't the problem, contact a qualified electrician to restore power to
    the outlet.

If there is power to the appliance but it still seems to be stopped, there may be a problem in one or more of these:

    • Wiring

    • Thermostat

    • Defrost timer

    • Compressor

    • Overload and/or relay"
If it is on but it is not cooling at all then it is the compressor.

    See more hints from Repairclinic.

"If the refrigerator isn't cool, you need to answer some questions, then see if the compressor is running.

    First, answer these questions:

    • Is the refrigerator completely dead? If so, see “It's stopped completely.”

    • Is the thermostat knob turned to the proper setting? If not, reset it.

Next, see if the compressor motor is running

    The
compressor is a football-sized case with no apparent moving parts. It's
on the outside of the refrigerator at the back near the bottom. If it
is humming or making a continuous noise and your refrigerator is still
not cooling, there may be a more serious problem with one or more of
several different components, we recommend contacting a qualified
appliance repair technician for further help.

If the compressor is not running but you do have power to the refrigerator, there may be a problem with one or more of these:

  • The compressor

  • The Thermostat

  • The overload, relay, or capacitor

  • The defrost timer

  • The condenser fan motor"

The control board won't do anything. It is lit up but the incline and speed display are just dashes and the other lit up section is just constantly running lights around it.

Hi There, you didn't mention a make or model? It sounds like the motor control board has died. Has the deck been lubricated lately?

    GE bottom freezer stopped cooling

The unit needs two fans running and good airflow, one fan outside cools the condensor coil and the other inside the unit blowing across the evaporator. The compressor must start up. The defrost timer stops everything and switches on a heating element to defrost the evaporator for several minutes. Please verify these conditions.

GE bottom freezer stopped cooling sporadically every 1-2 days then cools again with no intervention. Unit is 5 yrs old.

Put the old board back in. See what it does, from your post, sounds like it was working correctly.

Bryant furance cat.# 333BAV048080, with A/C cooling selected, blower motor during high speed operation stopped running, but the outside A/C unit was still running.Check that the motor is free wheeeling....

Hello, sincebthe motor will not run in heating and cooling the first thing to do is check the capacitor, set your meter to ohms and disscharge the capacitor with a screwdriver, if the capacitor is good the meters numbers should ramp up and down, if not the capacitor is bad. To check the motor turn off power to the unit and take you meter and measure from the common wire to each other wire coming from the motor, you should have resistance,if not the motor is bad and must be repalaced. To check the board place one meter lead on the cool/high speed motor tap and the other lead to ground, if therebis no power on a call for cooling the board is bad.

Carlton dishwasher stoped working power still on just stopped mid cycle

    Hello gracepat,
    Welcome

You only said,Carlton dishwasher stopped working power still on just stopped mid cycle

What is the MODEL number and Year?
Try turning off the breaker for 5 minutes and see if it resets the system!

    Possibly

FIlls but Does Not Wash or Drain
    Faulty Pump and Motor Assembly

GE models that will not wash or drain often have a faulty Pump and Motor Assembly. If the motor is receiving power from the timer and it is not operating that is the case.
    Temporary Work-around:
With the power turned off to the unit, sometimes it is possible to manually rotate the cooling fan on the motor assembly. In certain situations where the dishwasher has set idle for a period of time, this may free the bearings enough that the unit will begin to operate. Where this works as a short term solution in some cases, it is often a sign of things to come. The frequency of the motor seizing will increase until it will simply no longer work

Waiting your response and if it reset the system?

Ok the motherboard is malfunctioning. Ive observed this exact problem before. Replace the board and all will be normal again. If you keep lettig it click and click it may finally kill that relay that you descibed to me or even worse the compressor itself.

Frige not cooling and click noise.

Sounds like a relay is chattering on the board. First thing would be to change that circuit board, it controls pretty much the whole unit. Make SURE the clicking is coming from the board and NOT the compressor though! See item 801 below http://www.partselect.com/Schematics/GE/00118404i08.gif
