Question about Garmin GPSMAP 60CS GPS Receiver

1 Answer

Connection issues ok. first off, i have topo canada v2.0 w'USB cable. i installed all the drivers that came with the gps and the topo software on my laptop. i have also updated all the software online. when i open mapsource topo, i can see the contour lines of the city i want(kelowna), and all the cashes that i have added. However i cant add the topo maps to my gps using the transfer button on the toolbar. whenever i try to transfer data to the gps, it (TOPO)cannot find the GPS. Topo says i need to 'set the interface option to garmin or host' when i hit the find device button. the gps serial data format is set to garmin, but the gps says 'not connected' in the USB garmin data format. when i goto setup> interface, the gps will not allow me to change the USB data format window. my serial data format window is set to garmin. the only other option i have in the interface is for the USB Mass storage button. Oh and BTW, i have been able to put data on the mass storage card. for some reason i cant choose which topo maps to load on my gps. it always chooses the 'salmon arm' map area. something else i have noticed. whenever i power up my gps i have to adjust the backlight; even after i have changes the settings in the setup menu. really annoying. i have reinstalled the software a bunch of times, rebooted, and even swapped batteries in the gps a few times. thanks for your help. al I too am having connection difficulties... Two months ago all was fine, now when a try to upload or download from MapSource I get; "No devices were found..... check interface option...." Well, the USB Interface box states "Connected." I can hear the computer go "clunk" when I connect the 60cs, but the MapSource doe not see the 60cs. I have uninstalled and re-installed the "Trip and Waypoint Manager" and "MetroGuide," but nothing seems to help. Any suggestions would be great... Thanks in Advance...

I have the exact same problem with no solution in sight. Did you ever figure anything out that worked?

I have had my 60CS for several years without any problems. Now I am having the same problem. The software will not recognize the GPS; reloaded software & drivers etc. - without result. I have travel bugs to place from overseas and no way to find a cache nearby. So far, Garmin's website had not been helpful

I have an Etrex Vista C. I have had it for about 4 years. I am trying to install "TOPO U.S.A. 2008" USB data into the Garmin Etrex from the computor. However, it does not appear to be loading. It doesn't...

How are you installing?

You need to have Mapsource running, select the Topo USA 2008 maps to show on your screen. Use the Map Select tool, and select all the maps you want to send to the unit. Then hit the Send to GPS at the top and a pop up window asks what you want to send. Select Maps.

If this is what you have done already, please come back and tell us and we'll trouble shoot from there.

Garmiin nuvi gps,

The device uses SD cards actually. They will not however work with TOPO maps or Bluechart. They are primarily for loading media or city street maps for other country's.

GPS position is offset from map location

This could be because your datum and your posistion format. Under your menu go to setup, then units and make sure you have the correct info set in there for your area. NAD27 Canada would be the one you are looking for. Give that a try and see if it works. If it is still off, consult the manuals that came with your topo and see if it says what datum it uses.

For back roads, you will need a Topo mapping program, ie Topo USA 2008 or Topo Canada 4 (you don't mention what country you are in).

Topo Canada comes on four CDs, Topo USA 2008 comes on one DVD so you'll have to upgrade your drive, or else load the maps from someone else's computer.

Garmin GPSMap 60 CSx USB Connection

Actually, I just solved the problem myself...

I went to Garmin's driver download site (http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=591) and got the latest USB driver (2.2.1) for the 60C. (Although, it appears that that driver pertains to all Garmin products, not just the GPSmap series or the 60C.) Installation instructions are pretty much standard for Windows drivers, so it's easy.

That: a) Garmin requires special USB drivers for their product is finicky (most USB-connectable products just connect automatically using Windows' generic USB driver), and b) my unit -- which had always worked just fine, and suddenly stopped connecting out of the blue -- remains a mystery. Nonetheless, a driver upgrade was the final step that I needed. (Although, I also swapped USB cables and upgraded MapSource, too, so maybe it's some combination of those things.)
