I have the same problem, and I'd only taken about 20 pictures with it...

Luckily for me I only bought the camera yesterday so it's going back to the retailer to be swapped for another unit

Hopefully the new one will work properly

Try pressing the 2 green buttons to reset the unit . if you get lucky and it turns on, immediately follow the steps to update your firmware on this website http://ampin.wordpress.com/2007/03/02/nikon-d40-firmware-upgrade/ , otherwise you will need to take the camera to an authorized repair center . :)

Nikon D80 error

The ERR message indicates a camera malfunction. In my D-90 manual it says that it can be cleared by releasing the shutter. The only way to do that is to turn the camera off and back on. Rarely, that won't work and you have to remove and reinstall the battery.

The manual also says that it this have frequently or persist to contact a Nikon authorized service center. I would contact Nikon tech support at www.Nikon.com and discuss the problem them before contacting an authorized service center.

Initialization Error on my nikon d40

This is usually caused by a failure of the motor in the SQ unit on the side of the mirror box. It raises and lowers the mirror, ***** the shutter, and operates the aperture mechanism.
