You will need a resetter. Some vendors of ink refills sells the resetter. But csot about US50.00. If in UK there are ink refill companies that will do it for you at a service cost.

Replace the applicable ink tank with a new
one, and close the scanning unit (printer
cover).
Printing with a once-empty ink tank can
damage the printer.
To continue printing without replacing the
ink tank(s), press the Resume/Cancel
button for 5 sec. or longer to disable the
function to detect the remaining ink
amount. After the operation, it is recorded
in the printer EEPROM that the function to
detect the remaining ink amount was
disabled.

I only want to scan but need a new cartridge - do i have to replace cartridge before scanning is enabled.

You will need a new cartridge before you can scan.
What you could try is to remove both ink cartridges.
Turn printer off and unplug from outlet.
Wait at least 30 minutes, this will let the printer to reset
Turn your ink cartridge upside down for 2 minutes before installing.
This will let some of the ink from the bottom to reach the printhead.
Plug printer back in and turn on and install ink cartridges.
This might work if your printer only detected a low ink condition at first.
For the scanner to work, the printer must have no alarm.

I disabled ink monitoring on my Canon IP4500, how do I set it back to factory default so that I can monitor the inks again?

It will set itself back as you install new Canon inks, but will be turned off for the remaining inks until they are used up.

Even with brand new ink, my canon iP4500 won't work

A few basic causes.

1. The cartridges you bought iwere not proper HP ones and many "clone" cartridges are known to have problems with the ink level chips

Take them back and get them replaced with a different brand

2. They are original cartridges but may still be faulty (rare but possible)

Take them back and get them replaced

3. Your print head is clogged or faulty

Run your printerthrough the head cleaning process a few times and see if it clears up.

4 your cartridges are out of alignment

run the cartridge alignment process

Hi I Have a Canon IP4500 and have fitted new inks however error message says an ink tank error has occured.Open the printers cover and replace the ink tank on which the ink lamp is off. I Have tried...

Normal 0 Driver could be corrupt.
Disconnect the printer or at least be sure it is turned off. I'd do both and reinstall the CD software program that came with the printer. When the software program asks you to connect the printer to the USB port, do so and it should again work properly.
Hope this helps. Bud
