Question about Canon PowerShot S3 IS Digital Camera

1 Answer

Image size seems to change

3 times now since we got our Canon Powershot S3 IS a year and a half a go the image size has changed to small. My wife and I are both sure that we did not change it. We are sure that we did not accidentally press func. and then arrow over to switch it. Is there another way this could have changed on us? It's very disappointing to see some nice shots, in a low qualtiy that can't be printed decently. Could running out of batteries do this?

The likely problem is the shortcut button which sits below the ISO button. The factory default for this button is image size. Every time you press it (or catch with your thumb) the image size will change. catch it enough times and it will get down to S (640x480). Why this was chosen as the preferred shortcut is anybody's guess!

The button can be changed to do something else less severe (e.g. cycle the display on/off). This is done via "MENU", then the 1st tab (looks like a camera) then "SET SHORTCUT BUTTON" then select the most appropriate option (page 61-62 of advanced S3IS manual).

It's happened to me several times to once in a lifetime pictures (Ankgor Wat in Cambodia).

You may not be able to change the image to 300 dpi, but you can change the image quality to S (small). Go to the camera's Menu and then to Image quality and select the lowest image quality setting.

How do you change low level format

Check your image size. If your image file size is only about 80KB per image- you have the camera set to take small images.

Another factor is the compression ratio/image quality you choose. Your choices are fine and normal. You may have yours set to "Normal"

If you are in need of a manual, check Canon's website:

Changing file/photo size

Image size: Press the FUNC/SET button. Use cursor-up/down to select the current image size at the lower-left corner. Use cursor-right/left to select the desired size and press FUNC/SET.

File size (compression): Same as above, except choose the item just above the image size.

Full instructions are in the "Changing the Recording Pixels/Compression (Still images)" section of the manual (page 57 in my copy). If you need a manual, you can download one from the manufacturer's web site at

Canon PowerShot S3 Is

The date and time (and a lot more) are stored with every picture in its EXIF metadata. Any photo viewing/editing program should be able to display this data. To print this data, please consult the documentation for whatever program you're using to print your pictures. Depending on the program and printer you may print the date on the image, in the margins, or on the back.

Aperture priority and image size

Auto and the other settings each have an independent image size that the camera remembers. You need to set the image size for AP. Go to AP mode and press FUNC. The image size should show up in the left menu (it may say L, M1, M2, S, standing for Large, Medium, and Small, resolution settings). Select it and choose a different size that you'd prefer (believe that you want L). Then press FUNC again to exit the menu.

Horizontal Lines after-photo.

Hi, I don't know if this is going to be your problem, but recently the Canon anounced a recall for Canon S1 IS, due CCD problems. Most people with this problem complains of lines on the image, or the image going completely black. Some are having their CCD changed, but most of the users are having their S1 replaced for a brand new S3. Contact the Canon Technical Support, and maybe you get a S3 for free...
