My camera's playback works, but when I try to switch to video or thetaking picture function, it beeps five times, and the screen switchesto playback. The lens is already retracted. So the camera does not takepictures or video, only shows the pictures that I have already taken. How do I get the lens to extend and the camera to start takingpictures? The camera hasn't been abused in any way according to my ownknowledge.

I almost have the same problem. My camera automatically switches between playback and camera mode quickly only for a while, then it remains still in the playback. When it remains in playback,if I toggle the playback/camera switch few times,it may work for some shots but again the problem begins. (http://www.fixya.com/ThreadAsker.aspx?thid=2918658) Did you find any solution?
If when switching from playback to LCD then Viewfinder and no preview display is visible in either LCD nor viewfinder then the switch is not switching. If the red battery light is on try new batteries as some functions are unavailable with low battery power or connect the AC adaptor to see if power is a problem. Does the menu work? Does the zoom function move the lens? If all is functional in the playback mode then the switch may not be making contact internally. Carefully apply pressure to the switch while slowly moving it between all 3 positions while seeing if any display changes both through the viewfinder and the LCD. If you are technically confident you can open the camera case and try bridging the switch poles with a small screw driver to see if the switch is defective or misaligned. EBay has had DiMAGE cameras listed for 'parts only' very cheap but the Z3 would not merit the cost of a camera repair shop. My last successful bid for a Z6 was $200 2 years ago. My first repair on a digital camera was pretty simple since inside the case is a single printed circuit board with little ribbon connectors that can be reseated at ZIF type connectors. Just be careful, slow and keep track of the screws and parts orientation. Any friend who fixes laptops can help you but a shop will cost you more than the camera is worth. Good luck.
very good poss that camera needs mode dial switch assembly.Especially if unit was subject to liquids near the mode dial .part # 147966811 for silver and 147966821 for black model..First reset camera by pushing reset switch should be around batt compartment and or memory stick area.
I have the same problem - 4 fast beeps and it turns off. My guess is that the lubricants are getting old and sticky - I had a Canon SLR that developed the same problem after being in the extreme cold. Here's a couple of things to try:
You can still access the picture review features by holding down the review button while you turn it on (note that if you hold down the trash button you'll see the firmware version.)
What doesn't work: Resetting the camera from the setting menu; replacing the battery, replacing the SD card, cursing.
I've been able to consistently get it to function normally by hitting the camera into the palm of my hand on the left side (with the viewing screen facing you), just after turning on the camera. If this doesn't work, keep hitting harder until it works. Once on the camera works normally.
What mode is the camera in? is it in "Auto" at the top there is a dial switch it to auto and press button halfway (shutter button) when you press the button halfway the camera will beep and display a square box on the LCD. If the camera beeps once and the box is orange it could not focus and you need to retry pressing halfway again. When it is in focus it will beep 2 times and it will show a GREEN box. This is the indication it could focus on the subject correctly. Its a machine and sometimes it takes it a bit for it to figure out what your wanting it to do. Its the nature of the unit
Is the lens sticking out at all? does it look square to the body? the front has a square opening is it square with the rest of the camera? Some times a weak battery can cause this or debris in the gears of the mechanism. Sometimes tapping on the unit while powering it on can free the lens and it will function. Sometimes a fresh charged battery will also work. It sometimes can take a bit of power to get it over the jam. Have you dropped it or banged it recently? have you shot in a dusty enviornment latley? sand, dust wind? these conditions can cause problems.
