My tv makes a buzzing or grinding sound when i first turn it on and stops after the lamp warms up. is this just my lamp starting to die?

You may have a bad color wheel if your TV is DLP based. If its a Samsung then you most likely have a failing color wheel. Lamps will not cause grinding or buzzing sounds.

In some cases the buzz is external. The vibration of the unit may just cause a tray, flat surface, or other surrounding attachments to rattle and buzz. Look for anything that may be loose or laying on or about the TV.

Loud sound would be coming from defective color wheel that is mounted i light engine, next to lamp housing. Replacement of color wheel is required expertise/ experience and professional will do that for you in correct and in safe manner.

I don't know about the buzz but when you need to replace the coolant it isn't the coolant that actually gets blurry, it is algae that grows over the crt. It kinda looks like snow if you look in there, maybe a tannish color on the blue tube. Usually only grows on green and blue tubes as plants don't grow under red light. Lots of directions available to replace the coolant but my recommendation would be to tip the tv over backwards, pull the plastic focusing assembly clean off catching the old coolant in a cake pan. Be sure not to let any leak on boards as it is conductive. Once those are off you will be able to wipe the CRTs off with a soft cloth. Pretty easy to fill them back up with a small funnel.

If you don't see any algae in there, there are six color coded dials that adjust focus electrically and brightness.

Hitachi c2114t loud buzz on bright screen

sounds like you have a gun or picture tube shorting. check the bottom of the tubes when you turn it on and see it one of them is lit up more then the other two if you find that then unplug the circut board thats pluged into the tube and turn on the tv again and see if you problem goes away minus that color.

Toshiba 56HM195 56 in HD DLP Loud Buzzing and color distortion

If the sound, sounds more like a Hum with some vibration chances are the Cooling fan located behind the lamp is going bad, about $20 to repair, if its a high pitch hum most likely the Color Wheel and if thats the case about $30.
Good luck, my fan just went bad now seeing green dots everywhere, so debating on just junking it out or fixing it, with winter coming on might just breakdown and buy LCD and say the heck with DLP from now on.
Good luck to you..
