My hp Pavillion dv6 laptop can no longer use Constant Guard which Comcast supplies. Also Quattro Pro quit working midstream. How do I fix it?

More then likely running System Tuneup replaced critical files that Comcast Constant Guard and Quattro Pro uses... I recommend doing the following three steps but only if you have the Original or backup copies of the installation disc/media for both applications: 1) uninstalling the Comcast Constant Guard application 2) then do a normal shutdown and reboot once it has rebooted 3) install the Comcast Constant Guard once that's done and successfully do the same three steps but for the Quattro Pro application

Can't read HD-- I/O error

"Joecolvette" has probably got it right, I've seen this before. The HDD enclosure circuit board has a fault. Can be resolved by replacing the enclosure. Plenty on ebay, just ensure you buy one with the correct HDD interface (Sata or IDE).

Alternatively, if you have a tower with a spare port, you could take the HDD out of the caddy, install it in the tower as a "Slave" (check jumper settings) ensuring the system drive is set to "Master". Then you can check whether the HDD itself is at fault.

Remove the battery and disconnect from power source.
Disconnect any USB or external devices.
Remove the hard drive and memory. Disconnect the CMOS battery in the memory compartment.
Flip unit over and hold power button for 30 seconds.
Re-install memory and hard drive.
re-connect your CMOS battery.
Power up unit without battery installed.
Boot into safe mode.
Go to a command prompt.( start, programs . Acc. , dos prompt or command prompt.)
and type chkdsk /f
You will get a message that says can't run know but would you like to run a next bootup ? Say yes.and and type exit.
Next, reboot unit.
Hope this works for you.

The heads on my harddrive move back and fourth constantly

try to access it from another computer through a USB adapter. See if the files can be read. This will tell you if the drive is bad or good

Maxtor 3200

Seagate troubleshooting Error Code 10, states that drive has failed. (Seagate bought out Maxtor)

Before you resign yourself to everything is lost on this harddrive, how about trying one more thing?

How about putting the harddrive inside in a new external enclosure, and see if it works? I suggest that perhaps the external enclosure it's in, is bad.
The harddrive inside is a 3.5 inch harddrive. Same width as used by a desktop computer. It is a Sata harddrive.

Here's an example of a 3.5 inch Sata, external enclosure,

Just pop the external enclosure open that holds it now, take it out, and install it into an external enclosure like the example above. Plug in the USB cable.

Don't know if this applies to your particular Maxtor Personal Storage 3200, but when I went to search for the type of harddrive it uses just now, I ran into thsi, and thought I would pass it along. http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/support/downloads/personal_storage/ps3200-sw)

Growling, squealing noise on start up. Then it usually goes away. But sometimes it remains less noisy when running, sometimes goes away all together.

Start by running a checkdisk on your drive. This can be done by opening my computer, right click on your harddrive, typically c:, and then properties. In the window, click tools and under error-checking, click check now.

Or, you can open start and click run, then type chkdsk.

Maxtor also offers a few tools to check for bad sectors on your drive, as well as the Ultimate Boot CD has some tools, found at ultimatebootcd.com.

Hi there, I think it may be to do with the format of the harddrive - see if you used the Maxtor in a Windows XP environment it would have been formatted to suit that OS.

Is the Harddrive formatted to NTFS?

My some what broken compaq evo n610c

Hi eco953,
I just recently faced the same problem. What I did was I boot up with my original Windows CD that do have repair option. After that if you're repair mode run CHKDSK /R ,this will check your harddrive and repair BAD sector.I didn't realise that I have a bad harddrive and when it read up to that sector it just crash and blue screen POP-UP.
Incase you don't have a Windows CD then the other choice is to remove this harddisk out and connect to other PC/Laptop and run software to check Harddisk fist.
Goodluck,takecare
