1983 buick lesabre wagon fan/alt belt squeals when I turn on the AC first mile only then it stops for the day, tried replacing the belt, tried a higher quality belt, tried over tighting till the water pump went bad, pump repaired squeal still there, stops with belt conditioner spray for one start only then squeal comes back next time. Suggestions?
I've been told soap will just allow the belt to slip for a bit and stop charging the battery, like putting soap on drawer slides so the draw slides easier, as soon as the soap wears off the squeal will return. I do plan to try de-glazing the pully with a wire brush.I've been told soap will just allow the belt to slip for a bit and stop charging the battery, like putting soap on drawer slides so the draw slides easier, as soon as the soap wears off the squeal will return. It sounds to me that your belt or tensioner is worn, if the noise goes away when the ac is off then it is just the belt slipping, it takes a lot of power to run the compressor and if the belt is worn it most likely slipping on the pully when you engage the clutch.
Year make and model ?? The belt could be glazed and slipping even if it is tight. You could have a weak belt tensioner too. The noise when the ac or heat is turned on can be the extra load from the ac compressor or the alternator. The compressor cycles on and off especially in defrost mode. The load from the alternator is the first noise of the day. As the belt warms up it becomes better at handling the load of the accessories. Even tho the belt looks fine, you may have to replace it to get rid of the noise.
If u no somebody or u that nose about the belts get a cake of sope when the car is idle and hold it on the inside of the belts and try that and let me no
Find the EGR valve on the intake and locate the vacuum hose that is connected to it. Start the engine cold and as it warms up, pull the hose off and if it idles and drives fine, the EGR valve is bad and needs to be replaced. Please rate me on this answer.
what brand belts are they? try gates where other belts stretch these will not, make sure ac not gat ot much freon in it or fans not cooling condenser down.this will make ac compressor try to lock up,,,,,i would try an old mans remedey ,axle grease on grip side of belt, not any thing else ,every thing else will come off, belt dressing will make things nasty and wont stop squeal
the ac belt is sperate from the power steering belt.. sounds to me you need to replace the belts (both of them) but theres a idler pully in the middle of them all witch may have a bearing going out on it..i had to change mine at about 85,000.. when i had the belts off i spun the pully and it was excessivly stiff cause'n slipage and also a squel.. hope its not the alt, or water pump making the noise..they can run ya into some $$
