Question about PC Desktops

Three Firewalls You say I have 3 firewalls; use only the modem firewall. However, I uninstalled Norton Internet (one of the three) when Norton gave me support; and I uninstalled Windows firewall; still, the problem wasn't solved.

You can't 'uninstall' the Windows Firewall, just deactivate it. Another option is to turn off the modem firewall (the strongest of the three, now two) and to activate the Windows one (the weakest but most annoying one). Now you stated that you can't use Internet Explorer but everything else was ok, skip IE, use Firefox or Opera.
Good luck!

Tip

Firewall Configuration

A firewall is a type of security mechanism used for preventing security threat in both incoming and outgoing computer traffic. It protects your computer system and/or the private network from intrusions.
It acts as a barrier, which checks all the incoming and outgoing information to and from your computer or a network based on the firewall settings. Firewalls can be customized according to the level of security required. It filters the messages based on some conditions, such as the IP address, ports, protocols, domain names etc.
These can be implemented in the hardware, software or sometimes both and scan the entire messages passing through it and veriy whether each block or packet of the message meets the specified security criteria.
Some operating systems like Microsoft Windows offers built-in firewalls, which are by default turned on to block incoming threats from the Internet. You can also look for any third-party software or hardware firewall to replace the default Windows firewall.
Types of firewall
There are various types of firewalls like:
1. Packet filtering firewall
2. Application-level gateways
3. Circuit-level gateways
4. Hybrid firewall
The role of packet filtering firewall is to examine the information available in the header of the message packets. The Application-level gateway firewall works on the application layer of the protocol stack. It works in a more intelligent way as compared to the packet filtering firewall.
Mentioned below are some of the conditions, which help in adding or removing the filters from the firewall:
1. IP address: Every machine connected to Internet has a unique IP address. You can customize the firewall to block any IP address, if it seems to show an uneven or unauthorized attempt or nature.
2. Protocols: You can decide which protocols to be included in your firewall’s filters. Some of the commonly used protocols, which can be included in the firewall are: IP, HTTP, TCP, FTP, SMTP etc.
3. Ports: You can configure the firewall to allow or block any port number.
Similarly, there are various other conditions which can be used to configure the firewall.

I have a new acer that will not recognized the IP address for my internet connection. Internet provider has completed troubleshoot and says it's not their connection.

if you go to ("start/run and type CMD" if XP) or (start / -in "start search here" type CMD , if it is a vista) and you should see a black window, in it, type --> ipconfig
and press enter, that should show you an IP address, if it is 169.xxx.xxx.xxx that means you network card is either bad or not talking to you router of DSL modem , if it is connected to router, bypass the router and connect it directly to modem (cable modem or DSL) and restart the computer, if still does it (meaning 169 still), that means the cord could be bad, (swap it) or that means you network card is BLOCKED from the outside world by a Firewall. diable the firewall, (disable windows firewall first, restart pc, if still, that means you might have an another firewall (some firewalls if they expire, they do a total lock down, meaning, they will not allow you to connect to the outside world, in some cases you might need to uninstall the firewall totally.)

worst case senario , you might need to replace you network card *go to walmart, and get one, they are around the $10 or $12. and replace it. (hoping that you have either XP or vista) if you have an earlier one, do not even bother with it.

Skillground error 357

i've tried (for several days now) to download the software, but everytime i click "download & play" nothing happens
(it looks like the 'page' just keeps refreshing it self for several minutes, ending in a "error code 357" message!

I contacted skillground numerous times , and thou they are helpful in their replies.. they keep saying that its my router and/or firewall that prevents the software from downloading.. BUT

even when i disable the router (running the internet cable direct from the "wall plug" into my pc) , and disableing my firewall (Norton) (i have even tried uninstalling the Norton).... its still the same problem

I've allowed cookies... set the internet security to minimum ..disabled the router and Norton firewall, ..removed the skillground 'program' and even tried to create another account ...but its still the same problem ... so i've ran out of idea's

but have you tried checking (in addition to your router, and norton firewalls) the built-in vista firewall?

I can't connect to the internet

Check your firewall settings to make sure that the communication software is being allowed to pass through it. For some reason, many systems that use custom dialers are automatically blocked by many firewalls. This includes services such as NetZero, PeoplePC and others. You need to know the name of the dialer program for 3 mobile (I'm in the US and have no idea whatsoever what it would be) and configure the firewall to allow all traffic for that program.

My daughter is uaable to send and and receive mail using Windows Live Mail however you is able to send and receive on Outlook Express using the same settings. I get Error message 0x0x800CCC0F(Connection...

1. Dissable any firewall you may have running ( windows firewall , norton firewall , macafee firewall )

2. Attempt to email again using your outlook express.

3. If you no longer receive the error message turn the firewall back on and configure it to allow
exceptions.

4. Configure the firewall to allow outlook express to be able to connect to the internet under all circumstances.

You may need to consult your firewalls documentation to configure it correctly.
Or you may ask one of our Experts.

You will need to explain to them what firewall you actually have.

Thank you for choosing FixYa.

I need help connecting t o the internet

there are several issues that could lead not being able to connect to the internet. it can be a router problem if you are networked. it can be the ethernet card. it can be that you internet explorer is corrupted, it can be that you have an invalid ip address, it can be due to firewall. if you have a norton or mcaffee antivirus program the firewalls of this program can prevent you from getting online. or some updates from norton or mcaffee will knock off your internet connection.
try going to safemode with networking in the advance boot menu (normally if you press f8 when your computer is turned on) if you can go online in safemode with networking it means a program is causing you not to connect.
worst case scenario: REINSTALLATION OF WINDOWS
