Hi Dawn, the answering facility you have to ask your phone company about, which phone company do you have, just phone them and asking about the answering maschine.....
I went online and downloaded the manual for this produst and followed all the trouble shooting procedures until one of them was successful. I didn't download the entire manual but selected various pages listed in the index and printed what I needed. Accessing the appropriate manual was an easy process because of the manner in which they were identified on the vtech website.
