SUN SPARCstation 5 Desktop

I have a SUN SPARCstation 5 someone gave to me for free and it was just the Desktop. It came with 2 sticks of RAM unknown about the MB size. No Hard Drive but have a EIDE IBM 6.44GB that I want to put in it, and hoping to install Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition on it. There is no USB ports, nor PS/2 Port, only Keyboard Port. It also has a CD-ROM Drive on the side of it.

I looked on google for information about this and seen what I needed for it.
I ordered a VGA Port Adapter, VGA to AV Adapter to hook to Tv and a SCSI to EIDE Converter. Need a Keyboard that has the PS/2 Port on it. Witch thats where the mouse plugs into for it to work on this. But need to know if they made a USB card for this, Because I would like to have atleast 1 or 2 USB ports on this. It has no Modem port but has 2 Ehternet Ports, 2 parallel Ports and some others that i've never seen before.

I'm just using this for word and for some olds games, and using my Tv in room as its monitor. Witch hoping if I can find a USB port I could turn keyboard and mouse to wireless.

The sparcstation 5 is a microsparc ii system based on the sun4m architecture. Windows will only run on x86 based architecture, eg pentium. USB is too new a technology for a 13 year old computer, The machine maxes out at 256 mb ram, but if you have two sicks, its likely that you have 16 or 64 mb ram.

What you see are a series of SCSI ports, all different widths. Best case, yo uget 8 bit color (256 colors), and a scan converter won't help your picture quality. These machines are typically used headless (NO MONITOR)

Sell it on ebay. make a few hundred off of it. donate it to somebody who can use it. Not to be mean, but you don't have the technical knowledge to begin to use a machine like that.

Your OS choices are:

SunOS
Solaris
OPENBSD
Select varients of linux
Openstep
Nextstep

You cannoy play games on it, and the monitor also requires a very specific refresh rate to work.

Also, no chance of a wireless keyboard or mouse.

However, if you want to learn System V unix, you're in luck.

I own two of the buggers!!

You'll need a multisynch monitor to make this work.

You will not be able to install windows on that system. The processor speed is about 80Mhz and the ram that came standard is about 32MB. That is not close to the needed minimums of XP. You can install Solaris or versions of linux to make it a working computer. This computer uses a non-standard monitor port. The keyboard that works on it has the mouse and keyboard as one PS/2 connection.

How do I change the screen resolutions?

On your desktop where all your icons and shortcuts appear, right-click on a vacant area on the desktop. A menu will appear which includes "Change Resolution". Click on "Change Resolution" and select the recommended settings (one of the resolutions should have "recommended" next to it. Once selected, the screen should change. If it is acceptable to you, click Yes when asked and remember to click "Apply" before leaving the screen. Your machine will now be set at the new resolution.

Computer crashes with my RAM sticks both in

First thing i would suspect is a bad ram stick. Here is a link to a free tool you can use to test the ram if you dont have an application for that:

http://ubcdfull.sourceforge.net/

use the "memtest" programs on there.

I know, it works fine with 1 stick, but its a dual channel board so the ram may only fail on 2 sticks, so check it out.

If RAM tests fine, then go for a BIOS update. I have run into some weird things with that chipset in ragards to raid vs mem. Using RAID on that system?

Is your system overclocked? try running it at standard speed. If that fixes it then run at a lower overclock or get better cooling.

If it still doesnt work after all that, see if you cant borrow another processor from someone and try running it with a different processor.

If that is not the problem, try running a fresh load of windows for a couple of days, with nothing but windows loaded. If that fixes it then your problem is software, and will go away with the reload.

If you are STILL having trouble after all that, then its time to try swapping out the motherboard. Hopefully yours is still under warranty. If not, I like Asus boards - as they have a 3 year warranty and are just good boards.

No, the USB standard is not supported on the Sparcstation. Also, Windows XP is for x86 machines, not sparc based machines. You'll be able to run UNIX and its varients. Also, its a RISC based processor, which will give you a lot more punch than the x86 machines you're used to.

Of note, the TI 170 mhz procesor has issues with linux.

You'll need a sun keyboard for the machine.

SUN Desktop

Pat,

I really don't deal with desk tops at all, I have a guy that I contract all desk tops out to. I can ask him, but the Sun model isn't very common. Let me know what you want to do, any probs and all, I'll ask him, and get back to you. It might take a week or so, the guy is actually a former computer tech that is now a truck driver, and it will a few days with anything that I call him for. It's an interesting story on his computer skills if you're up for it.
