Have you checked all of the connections on the speakers, stereo, etc. Being a marine CD player, the wires and connectors are exposed to more elements than a car CD unit. Check for corrosion and make sure that all the speakers are hooked up to the correct "+" and "-" terminals. Not sure if this will help, but thought I'd try. It does sound like a speaker connection problem.

What would make the sound turn on and off repeatedly when I raise the volume past about 17.

well, if you have aftermarket speakers with no amp, the radio may not have the power the speakers need and it clips at that volume to protect for damage. if you have factory speakers, I don't know what it would do that, the speakers would blow before the radio would clip if they were factory because the radio would have more than enough power to push them.

Radio shuts down when volume is turned past half way. bad ground?

it could be several things, it could be a bad ground, a bad power connection, a bad speaker(s) or the deck itself could be bad, i would check all your connections first. if they all check good try disconnecting one speaker at a time.

Kenwood new sterio shuts off when turning up volume

You may have a short in a speaker. Check to see that the wire terminals on the speaker itself aren't touching any metal. Even 1 terminal touching metal will cause issues. Hope this helps.

JVC Car stereo with cd shuts off when volume is turned up

Hi Ithink , you are trying to push too much power to your speaker setup. Your cd, tuner, player, is only go as loud as the volume at half way setting. Your speakers are , probally good ones that want more power, and making your player overheat and making circut protection cut power. I would say, you should use it at 15, and that is as loud as it should be played to aviod distortion and overheating.
I'm guessing max is like 25 or 30, Is that so? You can listen to louder tunes by installing an amplifier. Or if you have an amp in your system it may be overheating, I would really like you to let me know if you have been trying use it at volume higher than half the maxium volume setting, so I know I helped, and you can start looking into power amp's. You can crank it up for good parts, but most players were not made to send alot of juice to good big speakers at high volume level.
Tell me what you think, tooldoc

Reads dc/dc error @ high volume

more than likely you have a bad ground and/or a power supply problem: bad wire connection, bad alternator - but check the radio's ground wire first.

Power problem?

???

1. Is the head unit powering the speakers directly or through an amp?
2. What ohm load (4,8,) per channel and how many speakers?
3. Does it do it with the bass set all the way down?

If you have access to a voltmeter see what the voltage is on the yellow and black wires when it is diming. It should be stable ~ 13.5v with car on. if its < 10v when dimming either there is:

1. Shorted speaker lead.
2. Bad ground to radio.
3. loose power feed to radio.
4. Ohm load below 4 ohms, causing the eccess current draw.

Radio shuts off at volume of 16 or more

Maybe a protection component cutting in.
If you have speakers that are too powerful for the radio it may shut down to protect the amplifier from overdriving the speakers. That produces too much heat in the amp chips/transistors and they either have a overload cut out protection circuit or they burn out.
Even if the speakers are the stock fitted ones the wattage could be bigger than the amp in the radio can handle.
There's probably no way of knowing how powerful the speakers in the truck are but you could try the radio with another set.
Max 50 Watts for that radio. If you don't have the manual for it, it's available here:

check your ground, it could be that your antenna is the only source of ground, in which case the deck does not have enough power to stay on when it draws too much power. I've seen exactly what you are saying many many times. Ground it really reallly good.
