Question about HP Photosmart 8250 InkJet Printer

Recognizes printer, won't print

Last spring my printer worked fine; I didn't use it all summer and now I have it hooked up again. (I just have the USB cord and the power cords plugged in...I can't remember if there's anything else that needs hooked up.)

I can't print anything--not even a test page--when I try to do it from my computer, even though the computer recognizes that I'm connected to my printer. If I go through the printer itself, it will print a test page (correctly).

When I try to print anything, under "status" it says "Error--printing." And that's all. No other errors on either my printer, or my computer.

And there is paper in my printer.

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

    I ran some print tests (using the screen on the printer itself), and it printed everything fine, all colors.

    Yeah it was. It printed out a bunch of text, and several large squares displaying each color cartridge. I noticed no problems. :-\



    The printer is still installed on my computer and everything. Can you think of any other wires or anything that needs hooked up? This is severely confusing me.

    recognizes printer but shows error. Printer will print test page on it's own but that's all.

What i'm getting at is if the printer was not used for a long time the cartridges may have dried out.

I installed new cartridges (Lexmark brank both black and color) and my printer won't work now.


A quick fix for most communication errors can be achieved by resetting the printer and/or rebooting the PC. Simply disconnect the printer from your computer (if USB connected)> reboot your pc > unplug and re-plug the printer into the power source to reset it. When the printer turns on, reconnect it to your computer (if USB connected). Then try to print again once the computer fully recognizes the USB connection or when the WiFi light on the printer turns solid green (if WiFi connected.).


If that doesn't help, try the steps below:

  1. Disconnect the USB cable connecting the printer from your computer.
  2. On your computer, go to Control Panel > Printers and Faxes.
  3. Delete the Lexmark print object.
  4. Reboot computer.
  5. Re-brick your printer by pulling out the power supply - black box where the power cord is plugged into on the back of the printer, and re-plug after 30 seconds.
  6. When the printer turns on, reconnect it to the computer.
  7. Wait until your computer fully recognizes the USB connection. To check, go to Control Panel > Printers and Faxes. If you see a new Lexmark print object in the list, try to print a document to verify that the problem is fixed.

My lexmark x1240 all-in-one will not print. It saves XPS files and when I go to open them it will not open them. I have already installed the XPS reader. Also, when I try to scan, a box pops up saying...

I got it hook up to my laptop and i wanted to print out 1 or 2 pictures. And it wont print.

We have a Lexmark 7170 printer. We have had no issues with it up until last week when it stopped printing. When you try to print it says printing but nothing happens or else it will say Communication...


Hi there, I have a solution for you. Unplug the printer/scanner for 30min. then plug it back in again.
This will reset all functions. The usb cable was good to start with, you didn't have to replace it..
When you run a print over another print it will jam up memory in printer. Clear all print jobs and you will be good to go.

If its a USB printer, try pulling the USB cable out and reinserting it again.

Computer does not see the printer


I was told by HP that I could not use USB over a network. I Called Apple support and was hooked up through my Airport Extreme using USB. You want a better solution invest in a Mac. They have the know how and what they are doing. It's like comparing a Model T to a Cadillac when you tout PC's.

Windows can't recognize the hp laserjet 1020


It could be a bad USB port in the back of your computer.

Are you using this with Windows Vista?

Did the printer work on a different USB port?

try using only one type of connection (USB or FireWire) see if that helps.

no known conflict for DivX for the printer, not sure for the mac though
