My son's PSP was downloading an update, and he took the disk out in the middle of it, and then it shut down immediately and now it won't power back on. I have heard the term it is "bricked". And I have also read something about pandora's battery. What should be my first plan of attack without spending an arm and a leg.

First I should ask what site he "updated" his PSP from? There are so many hack sites that claim free this or that and really can mess things up. What update did he perform? From where? Writing some things can cause a PSP to Brick. Which is in a sense a hard drive crash. Also how one downloads can as well. There are some fuse inside on the main board as well that can go bad. My gut tells me the download went bad and it bricked but I will wait to hear back on my questions.
Try this -
Remove the battery completely and let the unit power down. Now plug in the AC adapter and turn the unit on leaving the battery out. Do things function normally?
Try a hard boot by holding the power button down for 10 full seconds.

Under Network Settings, it would be best to choose Automatic to
simplify the process. Your PSP console will search for any wireless
network available nearby.

to Network Update. Be sure your battery is full because the update will
fail if you turn off you PSP console or if the unit shuts down due to
lack of battery power.

its better not to do this.
if your psp isn't hacked and u use umd disks, you should only connect to internet with your psp and

but if you have a cfw (hacked psp) you should first download psp CFW 6.20 updater and then vist psp-hacks.com for downloading cfw 6.20 pro.
I can fix it, When the system is shut down in the middle of an update the firmware or operating software is being replaced. If it is interupted it's kind of like your computer if it didn't have MS windows. What has to be done is that the firmware has to be replaced on it. You can do this by "hacking it which installs new firmware.
