Evinrude used a shift mechanism located in the lower unit that is actuated by a rod up to the linkage in the motor housing. It could be stuck anywhere along the way or the gear that shifts on the shaft could be immobile due to rust and corrosion.
You may want to find a blowup of your exact model via a Google search. Then starting from the top look for your problem. be sure to mark the position of anything adjustable so you can at least get it back to the original position when you reassemble it. First, the over heating alarm is for YOU to shut the motor down... Replace the water pump assembly..(have a different mechanic do it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)... they are NOT all created equal!!
Plossibly clogged intakes (grim in intakes) or thermostats not opening. I would suggest pulling the lower unit and then your thermostat housing and use a water hose to back-flush it out. Also check the thermostats in boiling water to make certain opening.
My outboard motor is old and used. When I went to run it for the first time everything worked except when I went to put it in forward gear the boat went slowly but when I gave it more gas the engine just reved up but the boat wasn't going any faster. The motor is 40hp gale model.I think because it is bought used the prop is not the right one and it seems like it's slipping as I go faster. I would appreciate any feedback on this problem.
