When You click on show all characters you simply have to type in the pass phrase you selected when you set up your router. If you forgot what you used go back and reset your router and set up the wep again and use something you will not forget. I use my phone number. Hope this helps get you up and running. If you need more help just ask. geokohler@gmail.com Send me your number and I will call you for free, I do this for a hobby so there will be no charge for my help. Let me know if you need me,
George
Ps. WEP encryption is not very secure, there is a program called netstumbler that can break in in less then 2 minutes. You might want to use the stronger encryption if you want to keep people off your bandwidth!

What is the wep password

The encryption key secures your data from unauthorized access.
The router's password is a Passphrase or the WEP or WPA orWPA2 encryption key. The Passphrase generates the WEP or WPA or WPA2 encryptionkey and this is in the router's wireless settings. To connect to your wireless router, it needs the router'swireless settings configured ie SSID, WPA or WPA2 encryption key and also thewireless cards in all the laptops and or computers needs to be configured withthese router's wireless settings. Then the laptops and desktop computers cancommunicate with your wireless router.

How do we find the WEP key for my WGR614v9

Configuring WEP:
  1. Use an ethernet cable to connect a computer to any one of the four LAN ports of the NETGEAR router.
  2. In a web browser, enter the router's IP address - either http://192.168.0.1 or http://192.168.1.1 by default.
  3. When prompted for a Username and Password, enter the default username and password (admin; password) unless you have already changed it. NETGEAR recommends changing the default password to increase the security of your network.
  4. Select Wireless Settings from the Setup menu in the left-hand navigation bar. n101675_image001.jpg
  5. Under Security Options, select WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy).
  6. From Security Encryption (WEP) > Authentication Type, select Automatic.
  7. From Security Encryption (WEP) > Encryption Strength, select 64-bit or 128-bit. NOTE: You will need to configure your wireless computers with the same setting.
  8. From Security Encryption (WEP) Key, select Key 1 and enter a key.
    • Note: WEP keys are entered in hexadecimal digits, which are any combination of 0-9, A-F.
      • If you selected 64-bit under Security Encryption (WEP) > Encryption Strength, then enter 10 hexadecimal digits for your key.
      • If you selected 128-bit under Security Encryption (WEP) > Encryption Strength, then enter 26 hexadecimal digits for your key.
    • SAVE or KEEP NOTE of these values - they will be required to connect wirelessly to your network.
  9. Click Apply to save the settings.

I set the router from wap security to wep and i cant connect to it now.

The WEP encryption key is in the router's wireless settings and changing this encryption will affect your wireless connection.
You must also configure the computer's wireless card settings with this WEP encryption otherwise the wireless router will not allow the computer to connect to the wireless router.
I suggest you use WPA or WPA2 encryption, this is a later and stronger encryption method than WEP encryption.

Asking 8digit network key

Sounds like your wireless network is setup to require a password (it has encryption) most commenly used is WPA, WEP and WPA2, you will have to ask the person who setup the network for the password.

Here is some more information from the NETGEAR site on WEP encryption for a wireless network:

What is WEP Encryption for Wireless Networks? Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) is a security protocol for wireless networks that encrypts transmitted data . It's easy to configure. Without any security your data can be intercepted without difficulty.
However, WEP was an early attempt to secure wireless networks, and better security is now available such as DES, VPN, and WPA. See the Guide to Internet Security to learn about network security.
WEP has three settings: Off (no security), 64-bit (weak security), 128-bit (a bit better security). WEP is not difficult to crack, and using it reduces performance slightly.
If you run a network with only the default security, where WEP is turned off, any of your neighbors can immediately log on to your network and use your Internet connection.
  • For wireless devices to communicate, all of them must use the same WEP setting. (40-bit and 64-bit WEP encryption are the same thing - 40-bit devices can communicate with 64-bit devices.)
While there is no extra performance cost to encrypting the longer key, there is a cost to transmitting the extra data over the network. 128-bit security is not much more difficult than 64-bit to crack, so if you are concerned about performance, consider using 64-bit. If you're very concerned about security, use WPA, which replaces WEP with a protocol that is - given current technology - impossible to crack. There's a good overview in What's New in Security: WPA (Wi-Fi Protected Access).
The WEP concept of passphrase is introduced so that you do not have to enter complicated strings for keys by hand. The passphrase you enter is converted into complicated keys. Choose passphrases with the same care you would important passwords.
  • With 128-bit encryption, you need to enter a passphrase to generate each key.
  • All four keys must be specified, because WEP switches between them to make your traffic more difficult to break.
  • All devices within your LAN must use the same passphrases (i.e., the same keys).
WEP is not necessary if you have a gaming console such as PlayStation or Xbox, and there are no other computers on the network.
Read Instructions on how to Configure Wireless Security (WEP/WPA/Access list). Instructions are also included on the User Manuals and Reference Manuals for wireless products (available on the Product page on this site as downloads).

What is the WEP key

Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP)
WEP is an older network security method that's still available to support older devices, but it's no longer recommended. When you enable WEP, you set up a network security key. This key encrypts the information that one computer sends to another computer across your network. However, WEP security is relatively easy to crack. f4008eb.jpg

Not prompted for network security key

Sir,

Under 'preffered networks', which can be found on the Wireless networls TAB in advanced settings, you will see your network there. Click on it and then hit properties. Under the 'Association' TAB, you will see network authentication, choose WPA-PSK or WPA, but I will imagine that your key is a Pre-shared key. Enter it there. Data encryption will be TKIP and not AES. Go to connection TAB, and make sure the box is checked in that section. If these steps fail, then you can always change your encryption to WEP. You can do this using a computer which connects to your internet through the WPA key. Once connected on that PC, open up command prompy using the command cmd in the RUN box when you click on the START TAB. A black box will open, simply type ipconfig and look for "default gateway"...it will have a number with a few dots, like this one: 192.168.1.254.....etc. Enter this code into your internet browser search bar, and hit enter. Your internet providers interface will show up, you can find a tab which will have something to do with wireless security, and there you can change the WPA to WEP, with a WEP key of your choice. If you are prompted for a password then you should know it! Sometimes, the usernames can be simply 'admin'. If you manage to change your security to WEP, you can use your laptop!

All the best.

Wep key

You need to go to your router and look for it there. Its a really long key about 20-28 characters.

good luck.

Personally i'd turn WEP off as its not secure and it actually slows down your connection. you should control access to the router via mac address filtering.
