Question about HP LaserJet 2840 Printer
A black line runs right down the middle of the page.
If this is happening when copies are made only and not on prints from the computer, lift the top doc feeder lid and located the strip of glass. You should be able to locate a spot of ink or white-out or something else on the glass strip. The scanner for the doc feeder moves the original paper over this strip window to scan it. A dot will appear as a line. Put some Windex or similar glass cleaner on a rag and clean the glass well. Shoot, while you have it open clean all the glass and all your copies will look better.
If it's happening in copy and printer mode (sent from computer), check the toner caridge for damage to the drum. To check the drum, simply flip open the shutter that has the HP logo and part number on it. You'll see a black tab hanging out past the left handle. Move the tag downward to momentarily view the drum. Keep the drum out of direct sunlight or bright lights as they are light sensative.
If there is a line on the drum, replace the cartridge.
Hope that helps you. If so, hit me with a FIXYA. If not click on my user name and let me know what you find so I can isolate it further for you.
