We have the same model (S740BAW) Panasonic. It is also doing the same thing only running for a few seconds and then turning off. It has been a very nice model w/no problems unitl recently. About three weeks ago it started taking us twice as long to cook everything and now the shutting off. No sparking though. Do we need a new one or can I fix it somehow?

Quite often this is due to grease or food particles stuck to the inside of the oven or stuck on or behind the waveguide cover.

The waveguide cover is usually about the size of a playing card and often held in place by a plastic rivet.

In some models it is a larger stirrer cover type made of thicker plastic in the ceiling of the oven.

It can be fragile, and the metal edges of the oven behind it can be sharp, so be careful!

The cover and the metal behind it should be cleaned with a mild, non-ammonia cleaner.

If the cavity metal of the oven is chipped or charred, it will have to be sanded smooth and clean and dried thoroughly.

Then you can apply some high-temperature appliance paint, available from places like Wal-Mart, Lowe's or Builder's Square.

If your waveguide cover is burned, it will need to be replaced. It provides important protection for the magnetron.

You can order Panasonic parts here.

If that is not your issue, you can reply back with more details or I would recommend that you contact your nearest Panasonic-authorized servicer.

No heat, but unit seems to run normally in all other ways - possible causes: failure of high voltage rectifier, shorted high voltage capacitor, magnetron failure, power transformer open/shorted winding(s), thermal protector open, or no 120 v supplied to power transformer.

How do I know wattage for 1974 recipes and convert cooking time to todays microwave (1200)

A 1974 Microwave Oven is probably not putting out more than 600 watts. You need to do a power test to determine it's actual power output. Place a 2 cup glass measuring cup with exactly 500 mL of cold water. Record the starting temperature of the water. Run the microwave on 100% power for 18 seconds, using a watch or timer, not the timer on the unit. Take the water out and stir it to make sure that there are no hot or cold spots in the measuring cup. Record the new temperature. Example: 78.4-64.1= 14.3.
Multiply 14.3 X 38.75= 554.125. The power output is 554 watts IEC. If the recipe is set for a 1200 watt unit, and your is almost 600 watts, obviously, you would double the cook time. Since this is rough, you need to experiment a bit. If the cook time is 10 minutes, check your product at 8 minutes. Be sure to push the stop button before you open the door when it is in cook mode. This will save wear and tear on door switches and leave the remaining cook time on the timer. Let me know how this works out for you..

We put a plastic jar with a very small piece of foil on the rim and the microwave started to smoke. it might have run 30 seconds before we noticed it making a funny noise. it is a 1200 watt inverter

Hello Dwight,

You may have damaged the microwave. Since the oven cavity is a tuned cavity, introducing metal into it can wreck havoc on the magnetron (microwave generator itself).

Did you happen to notice if the smoke was from the plastic jar (plastic heating up from the high temp of the foil ring), or if it was the actual microwave smoking (and not blowing smoke out of the oven cavity from the plastic jar)?

Panasonic 1200 watt microwave shuts down in 10-15 seconds

Check the door switches to make sure they are not faulty, otherwise it may be the inverter.

IS the microwave in a cavity? If so, you need to have at least 15cm (6in) space above the microwave, 10cm (4in) behind the microwave, and 5cm (2in) on either side, as the latest Inverter microwaves run very hot and need a lot of ventilation.

Panasonic 1200 watt microwave oven model:NN-S561BF,year:May 2001.When trying to heat foods the unit runs for 5-10 seconds then stops,I don't sense any heat.Anyone have any common repair tips? as I have...

Wow you must have been a TV repair tech too. Salute!! They have gotten more safisticated but some things never change. The magnetrons are real reliable. If the unit runs for 5 to 10 seconds it sounds like a control issue. The only other possible problem could be a bad HV diode. The new units have the safistication to know when the magnetron is not working and would shut down. Certainly an easy and cheap fix. You seem to have the expertise to explore this. Let me know how it works out or if you need more info. Thanks for using FixYa.

Panasonic microwave does not heat , but the rest seem's to work?

High voltage parts are suspect. Need to put a voltmeter on the input (primary) side to the high-voltage transformer (big heavy iron thing in there) Should be getting 120Vac when it goes to cook cycle. Don't touch the other (high voltage) side of this transformer. If the power is there, you are looking at replacing either the magnatron or the high-voltage capacitor and diode. Its affordable if you do it yourself - buy the part on EBAY - lookup "universal magnatron"
Hope ya fix it!

Panasonic microwave 1200

This model uses an inverter to produce high voltage. That symptom is an usually indication of a problem with the inverter or a bad magnetron. I do not recommend that a person without training and experience ever work on these models. You should be able to locate a Panasonic-authorized servicer here: http://www.pasc.panasonic.com/WhereTo/FindServicer.asp?Pass=1 I would mention the exact symptom when you call so the technician can bring a new inverter with him when he comes out to repair it. Might save you having it pulled into the shop. Good luck!
