Question about Gevalia CM-500 12 Cup Coffee Maker

Gevalia CM-500 12 cup problem.

Unit has stopped working. Lights come on (red on) and is not problem with timer (has cycled). Unit does not heat water or heat base. Had about three intermittent starts where pushing on/off button got it to work, but that too has stopped. Took apart and believe the heating element in the bottom is finished.
Plugged in and turned on power (red). The element did not heat at all.
Connections look to be in good shape, no corrosion or evident breaks. Appears that the water and base are a common heating element. Like the unit and would replace the element if that sounds like it's the problem.

Same Problem. Is it repairable, or do I have to ditch the unit?

My Gevalia Kaffe CM 500 Coffee Maker has now stopped working. The red light still comes on and the clock/timer works, but the wates does not go down. It does not heat up or perculate at all. What is the problem? I called Gevalia Kaffe and they don't even have a tech support team. I can't find my manual so I don't even know how to trouble shoot this problem can some one please contact me quickly.

    Sincerely;

    Coffee Lover.

I have checked the thermal fuses and they have continuity so they are good. How do you get the top off to check that out?

  • subodhn Jan 26, 2009

If any Gevalia CM-500 user discarding it, I will appreciate if I can get the filter basket assembly and will pay for the postage. My machine's drip valve has broken that sits below the filter basket. It has 3 parts - one valve, one spring and one sealer washer.

    Thanks so much!

Underneath the hot pad that the carafe sits on, there are two thermal fuses that are inside tubes that are clamped to the heating element with spring clamps.

Remove the bottom of the unit (5 screws), unclamp the thermal fuse tubes, slide the tubes to one side and check the each fuse with an ohmmeter. If one of them is open, that's your problem.

Jimpofic is correct about the temperature fuses. I replaced the one on mine that had blown.
I ran a pot of water through to test the coffee maker. Although the heating element works, it seems that the coffee maker is still having issues. It perks about half the water, then seems to "overheat" the water and it sounds like it's finishing perking the whole pot. The second pot of water only got to about 4 cups then "overheated" the water and sounds like it's finishing perking the whole pot.
It appears that the temperature fuse blowing is an indication of an element with a "hotspot", or it is simply getting too hot to properly perk coffee. It could be calcium built up in the water tube of the heating element, I didn't disassemble it to try to look, or clean it out.
So, after a couple bucks in parts and way too much time spent on fixing my two year old coffee maker, I finally went out and bought a different one. Problem solved.

Water not heating

If it's full of water & the red light is on, check if the maker is heating up the warming plate..if not, odds are you may have a bad heating element. Brewing cycle won't start without it.

Our office has a Gevalia Deluxe coffeemaker. It

Most likely the cycle thermostat that turns off the heating element has failed. It is supposed to reset after the it senses the water temp below 130 deg. If it did not reset or has failed it will not turn on the heating element but the clock will work fine.

By the time you ship the unit to a repair center with parts and labor and get it returned to you the cost would be as much as a new unit.

Thanks for using FixYa.
