Question about PC Desktops

7 Answers

I have loaded the software for a WRT54G2 on the new desktop. As instructed the data for setting up my laptop was saved to a jump-drive and installed successfully on my laptop. When I try to get online with the laptop, I get a "server not found." The icon in the lower tray of the laptop says it is connected to an unidentified network which is named ournetwork. Ournetwork is the name I gave our network when I installed the router software on the desktop. The icon does not have a red x in it, but there is something on it that looks like a yellow rectangle with a black exclamation point. When I right click and select Network and Sharing Center I get my laptop with a bar to the network icon that has the yellow triangle with an exclamation mark. The network is labeled as unidentified network. The bar from the network icon to the the internet has a red x in it. I previously sought help prior to buying a new desktop when I was trying to install the router on the laptop and the wireless on the old desktop. The problem then turned out to be that the WRT54G2 router wouldn't interface with OS's older that XP. That reference # was 080802-020027. This situation is entirely different, so I don't know that referring to the old contact will be helpful.

The problem sounds simple; I'm sure it is for you. I have no idea what the WEP/WAP ios key should be and I have no idea where to find it. I do presume you are talking about changing something on the laptop.

May I back out of this service I subscribed. If I couldn't understand the first answer, how in the world am I to understand the second? Good Grief!!!!!!!
I am on the desktop which is connected to the router that is connected to the incoming phone line. It's working. what I want is for the laptop to work.
If this is the nature of the service, I do want out; so please tell me how to back out. It ain't worth it. If you can't let me back out, please ask a suervisor to contact me.

  • r3dbon Aug 29, 2008

I don't understand how or why it is not connected properly. I installed it as directed using the CD that came with the router. What else can I do? The yellow cable is in the yellow slot on the router and the yellow slot on the modem; the blue cable is in slot one of the router and the ethernet port of the desktop. This message will go through the router and reach you.
I have no idea how to change the connection to make it any different. Is the problem the router?

NOW THE LAPTOP SHOULD BE ON THE NETOWRK
BUT NOW YOUR ROUTER IS GOING TO HAVE TO BE CONFIGURED TOO> BY NOW YOU SHOULD HAVE ALL THE INFO TO CONFIG THE ROUTER>
NOTE: MAKE SURE YOU NAME YOUR LAP TOP AND PC WITH DIFFERENT NAMES SO THE NETWORK WILL ID THE CORRECT PC TO CONNECT WITH

To most effectively support your issue, we require some additional information.

> Your Internet Service Provider ?
> How many computers do you have ?
> Operating system ? XP / Vista / Mac
> Try connecting to the router using an Ethernet cable (hard-wire using the cable that looks like a phone cord but a little bit bigger & fatter), are you able to get online ?

If you can go online wired to the router, please do the following steps:

1. Open Internet Explorer. On the Address Bar type http://192.168.1.1 and press enter.
2. It will prompt you to type in username and password. By default there's no username and the password is admin but if you changed it during the initial setup, please type in your own password for the router.
3. When you have the router setup page opened. Click on WIRELESS tab. Click on Manual then change the Wireless Channel to 11. Make sure the SSID Broadcast is set to Enable then click on Save Settings.
4. Go to WIRELESS SECURITY tab. Please double check the Security Mode. If the Security Mode is WPA-Personal, get the Shared Key/Passphrase (write it down on piece of paper). If the Security Mode is WEP, get the WEP Key #1 (write it down).
5. Now try to connect to your wireless network. Right-click on the wireless icon at the system tray and select Connect to a Network. You should see your network there, click Connect. It will tell you to type in the network key which is the WPA key or the WEP key tha you wrote down then click connect. That should fix your wireless connection.

The solution that I posted needs to be done using your desktop (Steps 1 to 4).
The Step 5 should be done on your laptop. Sorry for the confusion. Please give it a try again.

The router is not connected properly to the internet.thats the only problem.remaining every thing is fine.thats why it shows the yellow triangle with exclamation mark every time you try to connect.this shows there is some sort of error in the connection.
thanks.please rate the solution.

Seems the router is not correctly setup or connected to the internet - dsl modem.

Connect the dsl modem into the internet port, you may have to open up the web user internface to configure the connection correctly.

I would definitely say that is configured incorrectly as it is now.

Thanks,
Ekse

Is your network secure?? because if its secure you need to make sure that you're typing the correct security key

  • Mark Gil
    Mark Gil Aug 29, 2008

Go to your desktop computer , Open internet explorer then on the address bar type 192.168.1.1 hit enter then it will ask you for a username and password , leave the username blank and type admin for password.

When you're already on the Linksys setup page, go to Wireless tab then you will see there Wireless security sub tab then there you can get the Security key that you need.

Then after that connect again to your wireless network with the security key from the router page...

There's no problem with the router, you just need to connect your laptop manually to the wireless name of your router...if you have the user manual for your laptop read it to know how to make it work wirelessly...

Can I install a NEW 1T HDD where an old HDD failed?

In a lot of cases, the recovery disks you built may be looking for installation files (windows installation files) from a partition that is on the original drive of the machine. Your new drive would not contain this partition or the files. If you can STILL get into the old drive, I would consider putting both drives in your desktop.....and then use an disk imaging software to do a disk to disk clone of your drive rather than reinstalling Windows from the recovery disk. There are plenty of options for free cloning software.....just google free disk imaging, and you will probably find a ton of options with instructions. One thing to note....when cloning a drive be VERY careful when choosing your SOURCE and DESTINATION drives. Your SOURCE would be your old drive with your data, and your DESTINATION is your new drive. If you mess up that step, it will overwrite your old drive with the "blank" data from the new drive, and your data will be lost.

The other advantage to cloning, is you will get an exact replica of your current configuration. you dont need to reinstall programs or reconfigure things.

Need to reset acer aspire 1200 desktop

The Aspire One is a netbook produced by Acer; it does not come equipped with a CD ROM drive, so a traditional hard drive reformat and Windows reinstallation is not possible without a peripheral storage device. An external USB CD or flash drive will suffice, however.Difficulty:Moderate

Instructions

    • 1 Plug in the external CD drive, then turn on your netbook and let it boot to your operating system.
    • 2 Open your web browser and go to the BootDisk website (see link in Resources). Download the Windows XP Fresh Install Bootable CD, then burn these files to a blank CD via your external CD drive.
    • 3 Ensure the files have burned to your bootable CD, then restart the netbook with the CD still in the drive.
    • 4 The netbook should boot to the CD upon the restart. Follow the instructions prompted for installation. Upon completion you will have a clean installation of Windows XP on your Acer Aspire One.

Restore to factory settings:

If you want to restore your computer to its original settings without

recovery CDs.

Note: If your system is the multilingual version, the operating

system and language you choose when you first turn on the

system will be the only option for future recovery operations.

This recovery process helps you restore the C: drive with the original software

content that is installed when you purchase your notebook. Follow the steps

below to rebuild your C: drive. (Your C: drive will be reformatted and all data

will be erased.) It is important to back up all data files before using this option.

Before performing a restore operation, please check the BIOS settings.

1 Check to see if Acer disk-to-disk recovery is enabled or not.

2 Make sure the D2D Recovery setting in Main is Enabled.

3 Exit the BIOS utility and save changes. The system will reboot.

Note: To activate the BIOS utility, press <F2> during POST.

To start the recovery process:

1 Restart the system.

2 While the Acer logo is showing, press <Alt> + <F10> at the same time to

enter the recovery process.

3 Refer to the onscreen instructions to perform system recovery.

Important! This feature occupies 15 GB in a hidden partition on

Right click on the wireless connection on the LAPTOP. He is the one that needs to provide the correct connection script. Good case for backup, eh? In laptops, I reccomend replacing the harddrive WELL before you have any issues. Year and a half if you count on it. What you do is get the new drive and clone the old drive to it, the new drive will look and feel precicely the same, with no install of anything....Way easier. and cheap, at 100 bucks for new drive.

I want to transfer data from my dial-up desktop, to my new laptop high-speed broadband. How?

Several ways:
1.) 4GB flash drive
2.) External USB drive (320GB or more)
3.) Burn CD or DVD on the desktop and copy to the laptop
4.) Connect them in a local or ad hoc network (not too easy)
I'm sure other expers will have more ideas...

Anyway, at the desktop, run the "Files and Settings Transfer Wizard" to gather your desktop info, such as favorites, desktop icons, My Documents, etc:
[Start]
[All Programs]
[Accessories]
[System Tools]
[Files and Transfer Wizard] [Next]
At the desktop, answwer [Old Computer] [Next]
Cintinue to answer the questions
If you have a lot of music or loots of pictures, then just transfer the "Settings Only".

After a successful transfer of the settings, run the wizard again and transfer your "Data Only"

Hope this gets you started.

The hard drive on my son's acer 5920 laptop is nearly full and he can't get any more games to install but I can see it has a data drive how do I use this hard drive

Hi,

Initially, I suspect that actually it is still a single hard drive but has been partitioned into two, the C being the working drive and the D or E as the data drive. Depending on the space availability, eveytime a new game is to be installed, you can instruct the installer to install/use on this D: (or E:) drive instead of the regular C:\.. Windows and the the game program will know where it was installed/saved and run from there without any other intervention from the user.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.

I have an E-Machine W3107 desk top. I recently installed a western digital 120 hard drive as a slave but it would not jump. Can you give me any help in getting my system to jump. Thank you.

Jump? Ha! Never heard that term. How about boot?
Nowadays people just load drives as Cable Select; it should have worked with the old drive set to Master, but try to set them both to that and try again, or boot to a LiveCD or the drive utility disk so you can configure them on that. If they don't appear correctly in the BIOS, just double-check that power and data cables go to each drive, etc. You may need to follow the BIOS instructions or enter the BIOS controls by hitting DEL or F10 on powering up until the menu appears; then you can select the drive to try to boot first, etc. and save your settings.
