It appears that the update that causes this is KB946648

Hey,

You can uninstall the update to get rid of the error message, messenger service failure? you could start -> run -> services.msc find messenger from the list, right click restart or start if its turned off.

Thanks,
Ekse

I can't install windows live messenger, it encounter a network error while attempting to read from the file C:\WINDOWS\Installer\Messenger.msi

I found the site below and thought of your situation. Here is the message I received:
-------
"Network error occurred while attempting to read from the file:
C:\\WINDOWS/Installer/Messenger.msi
Please close all other open programs, and then try again. It looks like another program is preventing the installer from working. hr.0x80070643"
-------
If it's the same message, and you haven't found a solution yet, then this will do the trick. Although it's an older post, it works just fine for the current 14.0.8117.416 Messenger update issue:

Scroll about halfway down the page. Look for Microsoft Customer Support (Joan, Technical Support, Live Essentials):
Note: For the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility, I downloaded from this link (you'll want the latest version wherever you get it - 2.5.0.1):

How to fix text cannot see on yahoo messenger?

because of the virus we usually encountered this problem in yahoo messenger.. if we reinstall Ym ,the problem is still there..formatting PC is stressful and all of our files must be deleted...here is the solution for that..

To resolve this, open a registry editor (click Start, click Run. On the Open box, type: regedit and then press Enter). Navigate to the following key: hkey_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft\ Windows \ Current Version \ Internet Settings \ Zones

There should only be 5 items there, numbered 0 to 4. If you see a different one, especially if you see items that shows up as box, try deleting it. (Backup your registry first). If you were able to delete that extra item, this might fix the bug, and you will be able to see the chat messages again in yahoo messenger..

Messanger Failure while loading Media Center Setup Wizard

SP3 issue. you can uninstall SP3 and then hide it so that you will continue to receive other updates. Every 2 weeks you should unhide it and try another install. If problem persists you may need to reinstall OS from disk. Follow directions closely so that you won't loose any files.

Error code 80072efd

1. get ALL Microsoft updates, not just express
2. update messenger
3. uninstall and reinstall live messenger ONLY after you have backed up your contacts and other stuff. This is a last resort though.
