Question about Audio Players & Recorders
Got it off of ebay for $300. Said in well kept condition. will not record but will erase tape, will fast forward but not fast reverse, tape wanders off pinch rollers in both directions. should we get money back or try to fix it? any idea how much to fix?
The money issue is up to you. I would have a look at the heads and then take note of the cosmetic condition of the deck overall. The unit can be brought back to specs but no by just any shop or owner- it need to be worked on by a professional. I do them all the time. If you ask I will tell you where I am but generally I am not suppose to advertise. you most likely need a capstan belt and lub job.

Hi ok, the system has relays now if this has been standing around for years doing nothing the relays will stick this could be the record problem , 0k the tape tension levers/ idle wheels either side that bob up and down control the tape speed regulator . this is the probable cause of why it wont rewind there is a control transistor tha has gone bad./ or open circuit . these machines are like cars in every way you must use them . now these units are very desirable teac made a mighty fine deck like all the company's. so do you get rid or fix i restore these decks all makes. i take it from the dollars logo you are in the states or did you buy it from the states. i am in the uk i am working on one of these at the moment. if it was me ,,,,,,,,,,,,,fix it they are a fab looker and they sound punchy and true analogue.you will get $600 to £1500 if in good condition if its silver more if you were in uk price to fix my price £190..00

Hi there. It will need a new pinch roller, and has a bias oscillator. problem. From memory, they use a module for the oscillator, and the pinch rollers are easy to get. Sorting out the bias may be the problematic part, and you will need to recalibrate the bias traps and controls if you want max performance from the unit once repaired. I would go about checking things like intermittent tape bias switch, and try wriggling the record play switch( internally) and see if you can get erase and rec back. Noisy intermittent switches can caused the symptoms you have.
If you are able to, I would be seeking a refund. If not, then repairs are feasible. Let me know where you are and I can help you find a repair guy. Cheers
