You have to update it to 3.0. Or jailbreak and use the modem app in Cydia. Visit the apple site for 3.0 updates and how to's on tethering. You can not wireless connect a laptop to a cell phone for surfing, nor can you use a cellphone's wifi to connect your laptop to the internet. You have to connect your laptop to your phone via usb and teather its 3g and or Edge data plan. Your cellular provider also has to allow tethering.

How to connect an iPhone to the Internet

Connecting your iPhone to the internet is an easy process. You just simply use any application on your iPhone which uses internet service.

Your iPhone can either use WiFi or Cellular for internet access.

- A WiFi network is simply a wireless network. You can find them at coffee shops, libraries or even at your house if you a router setup for wireless access.

- Cellular data networks allow Internet connectivity over the cellular network. Check your carrier's network coverage in your area for availability.

When you use an application on your iPhone that requires internet service it will either connect to the last WiFi network used, or if that network is not available it will list all available networks in range. You can simply tap on the network you wish to join and it will connect. If the network requires a password it will show a lock icon. If no Wifi networks are available your iPhone will connect over the cellular data network and fees may apply.

To see all the Wi-Fi networks in range, from the Home screen choose Settings > Wi-Fi. Tap a network to join it.

Hi - am having problem connecting my acer aspire one laptop to internet thro wireless connection to iphone - have downloaded iphone modem application on laptop and phone but it never gets past 'creating...

Hi,

It would be best to use a cable between the acer and the iphone, or bluetooth might be a better option.

The cable will be the best way, if you want wireless go bluetooth.

This works around the WIFI network issue your having.

When i select my Linksys WiFi connection on my Iphone I still has the "E" edge symbol on my Status bar even though wifi is selected.

You can tell iPhone is connected to the Internet over a cellular data network if you see ht1695_utms_onb.png,ht1695_3b.jpg or ht1695_gprs_onb.png in the status bar at the top of the screen.

Do you have problems connecting to any other wireless network with your iPhone?

Have you tried using the forget this network option on your iPhone for your wireless network followed by trying to connect to the network again, and/or using the reset network settings option on your iPhone which erases all previously saved wi-fi connections that you have successfully connected to with your iPhone?
Let me know....

Internet on iphone 3g??

Simply go to Settings > Wifi. If Wifi is off, turn it on. You'll see a list of available networks when you're in a hotspot. You can also have iphone tell you when you're near hotspots by turning on "Ask to Join Networks." You won't be able to use the internet when you're not in a wifi hotspot.

Wi-Fi 3g

Your iPhone will automatically switch to the WiFi setting if it is there! No need to turn off the 3g it will use your WiFi 1st, and 3g 2nd!

WIFI Connection Problem - connects only to EDGE

If you want to use wifi only when your at home you can go in and manually disable the cellular data so the internet will only be wifi based. Probably saving you MB's and data cost.

Go to Settings, General, Network, then simply turn off the Cellular Data. Then it won't connect anymore to the cell data and rely only on wifi when your connected to it.

And simple follow the same steps and revers the process when your out on the go.

Thanks
