Question about GE (PSS26MSRSS) Side by Side Refrigerator

1 Answer

Ice/food defrosting The food is not freezing solid, it is always only partly frozen, and the ice melts, then suddenly re-freezes causing a solid block with a lot of ice elsewhere in the freezer around the food. I have had an engineer (not GE) out to look at it, who said he couldn't find a problem! It is currently turned up to #8. I can't find a local GE specialist engineer in Kent and am getting frustrated. The same thing happened about six months ago and then rectified itself - I had to throw away the contents then and it seems so now - is it terminal?

Same thing.  I have a 2 yr old GE Profile side-by-side.  About once a week, the ice maker section of the freezer warms and the ice melts and refreezes in the lower secttions of the freezer.  I clean it out, turn it off and on, and the freezer rtns to normal.  Afraid to call GE repairman because undoubtedly they will come out and find nothing wrong at that specific time!  Any suggestions?   Thanks

    Hello misterfixitj

your solution looks like it...but - I looked over a parts list for my PSC25MSSA SS (GE sideXside.. bought in 2006) and no defrost cycle timer switch exists. I am ready to (unfortunately) pay the high price for a ten minute fix job to a repairman.. any other ideas? Thanks

I think it is the defrost cycle timer switch. When it goes bad it sticks open and runs the defrost cycle which temporarily warms the walls of the freezer. Bad thing if it sticks. It is a part that costs about $50 that you can find at an appliance parts store like Marcone. There are two screws and it just plugs in. The simplest thing. It will take you about 5 minutes.

I have a GE GTS 221C fridge/freezer. The fridge is working fine. All of a sudden, the freezer is not freezing. Just cold, but not enough to keep food frozen. The fan on the freezer is working.

remove the rear cover inside the freezer if it has a lot of frost on it,then the evaporator coil is frozen up and you cant blow cold air over or thru a solid block of ice, defrost it,then check the defrost heating element, defrost thermostat and timer or defrost circuitry for no power or defective components, you can use a hand held hair dryer to defrost it quicker

Freezer is defrosting

Many times, on a fridge with automatic defrosting, there is a sensor at the back of the freezer section (behind the plastic) that detects a freeze condition - sometimes these go bad, In normal operation, usually once a day, the timer sends a signal through this sensor and if it shows a frozen condition, it activate a heater (yes, a heater) in the freezer section that melts and defrost the coils. If this system stops working, the ice builds up and closes up the air passages to the fridge section, causing it to warm up, while the freezer section ices up!

Check for icing and maybe try defrosting a little by removing power for a little while. Move any food to another fridge while you are fixing it. The freeze sensors are easy to change, but be careful - electricity can kill. Always hire a professional if you have any doubts about your ability to perform the work yourself.

Freezer not freezing properly, ice on back wall

Ice on the back wall indicates a problem with the defrost cycle. The ice builds up and starts to choke off the air flow, so your symptoms would indicate that may be happening.

Defrost problems are usually any of the three components, the heater element, the defrost termination temp switch, or the defrost timer.

Top freezer food gets freezer burn fast and now ice cubes and ice

Your discribing 2 opposite symptoms. But 1 thing may be causing both. first thing I think of is a defective defrost heater safety switch. It allowes the food -and freezer compartment to become too warm during defrost. This allowes the food to un freeze. then when defrost is terminated the temp goes back under freezing til the next defrost. 3 to 5 cycles like this and yes you could ahve freezer burn and icecream melting. DOes the ice cream refreeze too? If so you have to remove the freezer pannel covering the evaporastor coil inside the freezer. Locate the defrost safety.

1 of 3 kinds 2 opf these are b8-metal switches and are round and of these 2 kinds 1 is about nickel size and the other is about quarter size and both are round and can be attached to the coil tubing or the freezer wall. Usually these 2 kinds are on Refg/Freezers with no electronics on the door or thermostat.

If you have an Led or LCD display you ahve electronic controls and in most cases have an electronic thermisitor about 1" long and 1/4 to 3/8 inch dia and insulated and attached to the freezer coil line leaving the freezer or on one of the U bends of the coil. It may be attached with a plastic wire tie. (The tie could be broken but this is doubtful from discription).

1st freezer burn is usually caused by drying out of the food while still frozen. And this is why your case is so interesting by doing it so quickly. In all cases 1 the food is not in air tight containers. And the water in the food is being drawn out of it.

Admiral Refrigerator/Freeezer not cooling-food is melting

Most likely nthe refrigerator has a defrost timer. Need to find it and turn the timer clockwise slowly until you hear a click and refrigerator goes into defrost. If that happens you need to change the timer. It also could be an element is bad also. Let me know, Thanks, Sea Breeze

Freezer freezes up causing the refrigerator side not to work

you probably have a bad defrost timer. This item will turn on a hot coil to melt the ice when it needs melted. If you coils are solid ice then the cold air cant travel to the refrigerator side to cool it. This air is moved with a fan and the ice blocks the movement. Melt all the ice with a hair dryer and put the cover back on u will be good for a bout a month and if defrost timer is bad it will clogg again.

defrost system is malfunctioning causing build up of ice. remove back panel of freezer, check for ice build up. if so, defrost carefulle with a hairdryer. also check drain is not blocked by ice. if it is, use hot water to get rid of it. (takes time)
