Question about HP OfficeJet G85 All-In-One InkJet Printer

1 Answer

Paper Mismatch I am getting a Paper Mismatch Replace transparency with plain paper and press Enter. I only have plain paper. It appears that this is associated with a fax. I have successfully printed a test page and I have turned the machine off and on a couple of times. Something about a fax has caused this. I saw this message when I got in this morning. I tried printing the log to see who sent me the last fax, but it wouldn't even let me do that. I have taken all of the paper out to get the Out of Paper error, but replacing the paper had no impact. I could use some help.

Dig through the menus on the printer and make sure the paper type for the tray in question is set to plain. Sounds like someone set it to transperency and forgot to change it back.

Paper mismatch error reads on the front panel - "paper other than plain paper detected. Change paper and press ok to continue job." I only have plain white regular paper in!

So frustrating. What solved this problem for me was to change the ink quality to "draft" when I wanted to print. Hope it works for you as well.

The following is my exact problem...can it be repaired? Hard to tell if piece is broken. "My faxes are not printing. The error message says there is a paper mismatch and tells me to remove the transparency...

Somewhere, your printer has a sensor (probably a light and a mirror and a detector), to try to distinguish between transparency media and opaque media (such as a sheet of paper).

So, that sensor either has a piece of transparency media stuck inside it, or it is otherwise misdiagnosing what media is between the light-emitter and the light-detector, and thus is claiming that there is transparency media loaded into the paper-tray.

It sounds like you need to take the printer to a qualified technician.

Replaced the color cartridge and pressed enter to align printheads. Error message comes up saying "paper mismatch replace media with plain paper." I am using the same paper I've always used 20 lb white....

That error comes from a dirty sensor, you need a Q-tip to wipe underneath the sensor on the right side of the carriage unit. The sensor looks down at the paper as it passes under to print.

Issue: How do I specify the paper size and type?
Solution: Specifying the Paper Size and Type

Specifying the Paper Size and Type note_white.gif
  • When making copies on LTR-size paper after having continuously copied on paper smaller than LTR-size paper, the copies may be dirty. To prevent copies from being dirty, wait about 1 minute before making copies.
  • The paper in the multi-purpose feeder is fed prior to the paper in the cassette.
  • The settings changed in the Menu do not return automatically to the settings you set previously. Change to the previous settings again if necessary.
  • When making copies of a small size or heavy paper*, etc., the copy speed may be slightly slower than usual.
*The paper type should be selected in the Menu.
  • If you intend to make a copy and print with a thermal transfer printer using the same sheet of paper, make the copy first. Failure to do so may make copies dirty or cause a paper jam.
  • When copying onto transparencies, remove each transparency from the output tray as it is output.

Specifying the Paper Size At the factory, the paper size has already been set to [LTR]. Normally, you can make copies in this setting. When making copies on other sizes of paper, you need to specify the paper size according to the following.

  1. Press <Menu>.

  2. Press <la.gif> or <ra.gif> to select [COMMON SETTINGS], then press <Set>.
  3. Press <la.gif> or <ra.gif> to select [PAPER SETTINGS], then press <Set>.

  4. Press <la.gif> or <ra.gif> to select [PAPER SIZE], then press <Set>.

  5. Press <la.gif> or <ra.gif> to select the appropriate paper size (LTR, LGL, EXECUTIV, A4, B5, ENVELOPE, or FREE SIZE), then press <Set>.

black_dot.gif When [ENVELOPE] is selected: white_square.gif Press <la.gif> or <ra.gif> to select the type of envelopes (COM10, MONARCH, DL, or ISO-C5), then press <Set>.
black_dot.gif When [FREE SIZE] is selected: white_square.gif Press <la.gif> or <ra.gif> to select [VERTICAL SIZE] or [HORIZONTAL SIZE], then press <Set>. white_square.gif Use the numeric keys, or press <la.gif> or <ra.gif> to specify vertical and horizontal sizes of the paper in millimeters (mm).
Available range in [VERTICAL SIZE]: 127 mm to 356 mm (5" to 14")
Available range in [HORIZONTAL SIZE]: 76 mm to 216 mm (3" to 8 1/2") white_square.gif Press <Set>. Repeat the steps above to specify both vertical and horizontal sizes of the paper.

  6. Press <Stop/Reset> to return to the standby display.

Specifying the Paper Type [PLAIN PAPER] is selected as the default paper type. When making copies on paper other than plain paper, you can specify the paper type according to the following. Specifying the paper type can prevent poor copy quality, or the printout not being printed correctly.

  1. Press <Menu>.

  2. Press <la.gif> or <ra.gif> to select [COMMON SETTINGS], then press <Set>.

  3. Press <la.gif> or <ra.gif> to select [PAPER SETTINGS], then press <Set>.

  4. Press <la.gif> or <ra.gif> to select [PAPER TYPE], then press <Set>.

  5. Press <la.gif> or <ra.gif> to select the appropriate paper type, then press <Set>.
    paper_settings_2_paper_type.gif

You can select from the following paper types: - Plain paper (17 lb to 24 lb (64 g/m2 to 90 g/m2 )): [PLAIN PAPER] - Heavy paper (25 lb to 34 lb (91 g/m2 to 128 g/m2 )): [HEAVY PAPER], [HEAVY PAPER H]*1 - Transparency: [TRANSPARENCY] - Label*2 : [HEAVY PAPER], [HEAVY PAPER H]*1 - Envelope: [HEAVY PAPER], [HEAVY PAPER H]*1*1 If print fixing is not sufficient when printed with [HEAVY PAPER] selected, select [HEAVY PAPER H].
*2 A label that can be loaded in the cassette is a standard type (label standard card) only.

  6. Press <Stop/Reset> to return to the standby display.

If you have the install disk, go to the program for your printer and uninstall it. Then restart the computer, it should recognize it again. Re-install the printer and it's program. That usually solves most problems when a gadget goes nuts.
Also keep a can of air around, blow out insides; sometimes there's a photocell with dust on it.

Paper mismatch

Sounds like your spot sensor is broken. It will give you this error if not working properly. It is attached to the right side of the cartridge carriage and emits a small blue light when paper is fed in to the machine. It looks at the paper and tells the machine the paper is there or in this case not there.
