Are you sure that you are putting in a blank disc? What happens when you put the disc inside the DVD writer? does it show up as a blank disc? This could be one of the reason for the multi session disc box getting greyed out.
6/25/9: While this external HP DVD640e burner was listed as a NEW drive - "new" meant never used. A check with HP techs told me the unit was a 2005 factory closeout and the dual layer disc required for it is a 2.4 speed disc. I bought a 2.4 speed DL disc and it works perfect in it. As far as seeing a CD when a DVD was installed is presumed also the fault of having the wrong speed disc in it (that lot of Memorex DL discs I am also having trouble with elsewhere too).
Double-checking my profiler, it does give speed as 2.4x as the burner's profile. Alas, the problem was my newness to the DVD technology. A slap to the forehead and move on.
The drive in the G5 may not support DL discs. Open the system profiler (From the apple menu, select 'About This Mac' then select 'More Info'). Click on 'Disc Burning' in the left hand column. You will now get the details about the disc drive including which discs are supported.
If the drive is violently rotating, and only doing it for these discs, it may not be able to handle them. This sounds like a product issue (not the software you are using as it funtions ok with past items. Your sytem may not support double layer discs.
