The same thing happened to me. I found somewhere that the no/slow key response could be due to a short in the I/O socket. I blew into it really hard, and it worked perfectly after that. I hope this helps.

Connect the calculator to the computer and turn it ON. Open the TI connect software. Locate your file on your computer, do a CTRL C to copy. Drag and drop the file on the Main window of TI connect. If file is compatible with TI 84 Plus, it will be transferred to your calculator. Use the Memory management of the calculator to locate the transferred file in calculator.
If your programs are archived you can remove the main AAA batteries without losing them. If they are stored in RAM they will be wiped out. Just do not remove the Main AAA batteries and the button cell backup battery at the same time.
Unfortunately, you can only access RESET from within the menus of the calculator. You will have to remove all of the batteries and let the system naturally reset. The TI-84 Plus uses five batteries: four AAA alkaline batteries and one SR44SW or 303 silver oxide backup battery. The silver oxide battery provides auxiliary power to retain memory while you replace the AAA batteries. Re-install the batteries and reprogram your functions.
I have a TI-83 and there has been a dark spot on my screen for several years and it has not been a problem. Try to use yours for as long as possible unless the screen is unviewable.
TI calculators have an annoying habit of dimming the screen when the batteries are changed so that it appears as if the calculator isn't turning on at all. Turn the calculator on (or at least press the ON key). Press and release the 2ND key. Press and hold the Up-arrow key for a few seconds and see whether the screen becomes legible.
I'd try hooking it to the computer using ti connect explorer and see if deleting the programs there would help. I had a calculator that did the same thing and never did fix it. But if your memory can be delete and reinstalled it might work.

graphing calulators work much like computers. The have RAM space so they can remember what you have done recently and stuff like that. So when it's garbage collecting it means it's trying to find more space. This generally means that you don't have much much ARC or RAM space left. You can see this under your memerory manager. (2nd + enter) then you can reset your calculaor(2nd plus 7 1 2) or you can go to memory manager and unarchive your programs. Fur an example you have TI 84. Most new TI 84 have sientific tools. so if you don't you it take away the archive (*) by pressing enter and then hit DEL. the more RAM space and ARC space should make it so it doens't garababe collect. Hope this works. i can help you more if this doesn't work. GOOD LUCK
Mine will not respond to any keys and it too has nothing stored in the memory.
