You must have the original windows cd to upgrade to win2000, this is the only way you can reinstall it.

Creepy crawly virus through my grandson download of a "free" games has left windows 7 on in background but basically as wiped 3 years worth of files.

You could in principle note down everything you have installed, perform a system recovery to set the computer back to the factory, from either the Recovery CDs you made when you first got the computer, or from the Recovery partition on your hard disk (which should not be infected) You would then have re-install the other software that you wanted from scratch, either from the original disks, or downloading it from the internet. This includes updates, drivers etc.
One way of reminding yourself of what software you have is to keep a copy of your infected disk to look at (remove your new disk before looking though).
The other thing you could do is try to remove the virus. , either by returning the computer to a professional to do for you, or by yourself, or sign up to one of the many the forums that exist on the internet who will help you e.g., www.majorgeeks.com, www.bleepingcomputer.com, www.computerhope.com, www.techsupportforum or one of the many others. Volunteers will help you, and direct you to use virus removal tools. It may be a long job and may not always be successful - sometimes the only thing to do is start from scratch (erase your hard disk: try NOT to erase the recovery partition though. If you have lost the recovery partition, and you did not make recovery CDs, HP may supply you with a set of recovery disks if you ask them nicely and give them loot.
Let us know how you fare (in a couple of months....)

I have a spywhere infection on my advent laptop how do i resore to factory settings?

Using the HDD Recovery System
Your Advent computer uses the latest recovery system that doesn't require any CDs or DVDs to restore your PC to it's original factory condition.

There are two ways to start the recovery -
Restart your computer. Then Press F10 repeatedly until the message "Starting System Recovery" is displayed.
In Windows by clicking: Start / All Programs / System Recovery / System Recovery.
The recovery will load and display a box with one option:
Non-destructive recovery: this option will restore Windows, supplied applications, and drivers. This option will not destroy your documents or programs. These will be backed up along with the registry. These are restored at the end of the recovery process.
To access the recovery options below that erase all data from the computer, click the Advanced button.
System Recovery - No format: this will reinstall Windows, supplied applications and drivers. It will move your files to a folder called "My old disk structure". Any applications (except those supplied) will need to be reinstalled.
System Recovery - Quick format: this option will erase your hard drive including your personal files. Windows, supplied applications and drivers will be reinstalled.
Select the Non-destructive recovery option and press Next.
You will be informed about System Restore in Windows, click Yes.
The recovery will begin. Once this is complete click Restart.

Lost user accounts. no administrator allof

Either do a system restore.
Otherwise boot pc with windows disk and reinstall. You can buy another program called system recovery that will erase everything on the hard -drive back to brand new stage and then reinstall windows.

Compac recovery console

If you had a recovery disk given to you when you bought the pc, then used this to enter the recovery console. I pressume that you want to do a repair, in that you want to restore it to factory conditions?

Simply go into the bios and change the primary boot device to CDROM instead of hard disk. To enter bios, press "DEL" a few times when you first turn the pc on. The default is DEL but i have seen some systems with F2, (it will say what button you need to press to enter setup, look closely on the screen).

If you did not get a recovery disk, then there will be a recovery partition on your hard drive that you can normally access using an "F" button on the keyboard, usually F10,F12, etc (it should flash up briefly when you turn the pc on).

I hope this is of some help to you. Feel free to IM me if you need to ask more questions.

Hello,

You system is infected with a potent antivirus, and cannot be resolve anymore by a potent antivirus.

So you need to reinstall your computer to the original setting:

By doing this : insert the windows installation disk/ or the system recovery disk.
reboot your PC from the CD/DVD rom and then wait until boot finish.

If you are using system disk recovery , just read carefully the instruction on-screen.
If you are using the windows installation disk then here is the windows installation information: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/316941

May this help,
