You need to switch to Manual (M) mode. You won't be able to meter through the lens. Nor will you be able to autofocus.

Will a Vivitar 58 mm UV filter attach to a Nikon d3100 18-55mm lens?

Not directly. The 18-55mm takes 52mm filters. However, you could purchase a 52-58 step-up ring to allow you to adapt the filter to the lens for significantly less money than a 52mm UV filter. One such adapter is http://www.adorama.com/IRXRA5852.html

Canon on nikon

The Canon lenses are FD mount which means that you will need to get an adaptor to convert the FD mount to fit the F mount on the Nikon. An example of the mount can be seen here:

As for the speedlights the hotshoe mount will accept them on your Nikon, put them on with fresh batteries and try them out.

What size filter do I need for a Nikon D40 and what size filter do need for aSigma 70-300mm Thank you

Hi!
Usually the diameter is written on the front of the lens. You can use lens with different diameters on this camera, it really depends on the lens, but it will most likely be a 58mm.

Do Nikon D40 lenses work on D80?

mary349,
Yes but not the other way around - many lenses that the D80 can use the D40 can not.

A/F PROBLEM

The D40 (& D40X & D60) will not autofocus with the G series lenses. The three cameras above require a newer DX series of lenses for the AF to work.

Nikon D40 I bought a set of macro lenses that said they were compatible for the d40 but i cannot figure out how to fit them. They are 52mm lenses - should i have bought an adaptor or something? where...

Macro lenses are mounted to your camera body in place of the lens you currently have mounted on the camera. If you bought the camera with the lens already mounted you may not have realized that the camera and lens are 2 separate objects. To remove your lens see page 8 in your user manual for instructions and an illustration. If you don't have your user manual handy, you can download a PDF file from NikonUSA Here.

If what you bought are macro rings, they go on the camera, then your regular lens mounts onto the ring. You can use one or more of the rings between the lens and camera to produce different macro settings.

If what you bought are macro filters, they screw on to the front of your lens. If you have a UV filter on your lens you need to remove that before you attach another filter.

Nikkor lense

You need AF-S or AF-I Lenses. These have the autofocus motor built in to the lense. The D40 and D40x does not have an autofocus motor in the camera body itself, while the D80, D300, D3 Etc to have the motor in the camera. You can use most old lenses on your D40x, but you will have to focus them manually.

See Ken Rockwells page for a lot of D40 / D40x info

Really Dark Viewfinder

That would explain the darkness if the lens is stopped down. It would seem the aperture control is faulty on the camera body. Normally, the aperture remains open until you take the picture. It is only closed down while the shutter is open.
