Currently Olympus has successfully tested Sandisk Extreme 3 up to 8gb without any card error messages. It sounds as if it is a card compatibility issue. Try to exchange to an Extreme 3 and you should be able to use that without any issues.

I just purchased a 4GB SanDisk Extreme lll CompactFlash for my camers but when I try to use it I get the Unable to use card message. What can I do?

I suspect 2GB is the maximum the camera will take. A 2GB Sandisk card works in my 7i. When the DiMAGE 7i was launched, 256mB was about as big as CF cards got!

Can this Olympus C5050Z works with Sandisk CF Ultra 4GB 30MB/s? I tried to insert it, and always gets card error message, although I can use the card in my notebook.

Your camera was designed to be fully CF compliant, but it was designed long before 4GB cards were available so your problem is likely to be that the camera cannot handle a card of that large a capacity.

I've checked the Olympus servicing manual but unfortunately it doesn't state a maximum CF capacity and there have been no relevant firmware updates to extend CF compatibility.

When your camera was released back in 2003 the largest capacity CF card was 1GB so I suggest that you don't go above that size. You'll also be wasting your money on any more than a regular Sandisk Ultra as the camera cannot take advantage of the faster data transfer rates of later cards, I'm not even certain that it can utilise the speed advantage of an Ultra over a really basic model, but it won't cause the camera to throw it's toys out of the pram either.

I hope that you've found my reply to be of use and ask in return only that you return the goodwill and rate my answer.

Formatting an CF 4GB sandisk ultra II....How to do

The camera uses FAT16 so it won't be able to use cards bigger than 2GB. IF you can format it, you will only have 2GB space available.
Formatting the card: Press Menu/OK, select Setup, Select Format, press OK untill it's done.

Fuji s602z CF II card not initializing

I've bought a SanDisk ExtremeIII 4GB CFI card. Ofcourse, at the beginig nothing worked. Camera format command worked neither (initializing problem,...). I then formated my card through a car reader on fat16 and now everything works. Just make this command: format <volume>: /FS:FAT. After checking and formathing the card, you will be asked to go on by 64K size of cluster. say Yes.

Sony Alpha 100 gives error message when attempting to take pic.

Hi! I just had the same problem with my Sony A100, when I tried two different CF cards. I was getting the same error message as reported above: "Unable to use card" then "Format?" then that format fails. Thinking the camera is broken, I checked online camera repair sites and also called Sony directly. Sony's flat rate, and that of PrecisionCamera is $228 to fix CF card failure. Then my daughter said, "the CF card in my room works fine in the camera" - and lo and behold - it does. The CF card that works is brand PQI and is marked Hi-Speed 60 2Gb. The cards that do NOT work are marked SanDisk Ultra II 1.0Gb and SanDisk 128 Mb. So my advice is, before you give up on the camera as broken, try a number of different CF cards first.

The second cause of CF failure is if someone has pushed a CF card in the wrong way. That can bend one or more of the tiny metal contact pins in the CF socket in the camera. Look carefully to see that all the pins are straight up. [I don't know how one can straighten these pins, or if the whole socket would need to be replaced...but at least you can determine the cause of the CF failure.]

Best regards - Michael

Can't initialize SanDisk Ultra II for S7000

try formatting it in the computer, then initializing it in the camera.
It's possible that the camera can only handle memory up to 1Gb. Try a 1g CF card.

Rebel XT will not work with new faster CF cards.

Check the volume and speed of memcard, maybe it is not compatible. error 99 is an indication that a lens or shutter curtain is not working, so i cant see any connection with the memcard problem. Check your camera memcard compatibility.
