Question about PC Laptops

A virus I had wireless internet, and when I moved a "contractor" for my network, uninstalled my antivirus program. As soon as he did this I believe i got a virus. My background says "warning:spyware detected on your computer. Install antivirus or spyware to remove it." It was in a file called antivirusxp08 which I cannot delete. I was told by his supervisor to reset my laptop to factory settings but I have no idea how to. Could maybe you tell me?

this is a quote from a source on the internet about antivirus 2008

We find that XP Antivirus 2008 (Unregistered Version) is badware because it makes deceptive claims of system vulnerabilities in order to induce users to purchase the full version of the software, because it interferes with normal computer use by automatically running a background process which repeatedly prompts the user to take a previously declined action, and because the software cannot be uninstalled using the Windows Add/Remove Programs tool, or without downloading an additional uninstaller.

Freezing upon start up of computer

The best solution for you amanda would be to do a complete re-installation of Windows Operating System. As you can log in via Safe Mode, run the Recovery Manager from there so that your laptop is being set to Default Factory Settings.

Also, if you found it hectic, then here are a few tips to get your system going:

a) From Safe Mode, uninstall your antivirus program.

b) While in safe mode, restore your computer to an earlier restore point where you think the computer was working fine.

c) From Safe Mode, uninstall the programs which runs while you log in the windows

Looks like you first may need to uninstall your anti virus protection before you install mcafee. what is your current operating system? is it windows xp, windows vista, or windows 7?

Also please check if you have internet connection. Go to Start-Run- and type CMD

once the black box comes up, type in PING Google.com and let me know what the computer says

I can't conect to the internet

if you're connecting through Wifi, make sure the wireless on the laptop is turned on.
If you have a successful connection but your webpage is blank or says no connection, then I believe you have a virus on your laptop called a Hijack. Basically it prevents you from getting on the internet.
Use whatever Antivirus program you have installed and run some scans, preferably a boot scan.

Hope this was helpful.

VIRUS

Follow thegiven steps to remove virus:
As soon as you suspect that your computer has a virus, remove your computer from any networks it might be on, as well as from the Internet, so that you don't inadvertently spread the bug to others. Unplug your network cable if you have to.
If you have virus-scanning (anti-virus) software installed, run it.
If you don't have anti-virus software, you'll need to obtain some. If you can't get it from a network administrator or download it from an uninfected computer, you can mail-order it from a retailer. Start your computer (still not connected to a network) and follow the instructions that came with the anti-virus software.
Keep running the virus-scanning software until your computer comes up clean.
Reconnect your computer to the Internet and check with the anti-virus software's publisher to make sure you have the latest updates. If not, download them now.
After updating the anti-virus software, run it again until your computer comes up clean.

What disabled my network connection, and how can i download a virus protector if i cannot access the internet?

Depending what internet connection your using, dsl, cable,or wireless,. if its wireless you probably disabled your wifi , to re enable it push the wifi button, or right click the lower right hand corner with the two screen icons and connect to a network..
The only way to install an antivirus is if you go to the store and buy the antivirus program and just put it on your computer,, the only problem is you wont be able to update your virus definitions, i recommend getting internet if you want to get the best out of a antivirus....
