Thanks- that's a great idea but I also found a website that automatically checked my warranty and I had just a couple of days left under warranty...miracle actually...seems like it's always a few days after. So sent it back in but I will keep it in mind for the future. It was just a back-up drive so will just back up all the info again when I get it back. Thanks agin-

Have you change the fuse for the Maxtor unit, with a known to be good one.
Use a "meter" to see is there pwr coming from the adapter (or ask a friendly electrician to check for you)
However as a last resort If the drive caddy turns out to be blown & there is important data on the drive, it may be possible to have the case dismantiled, and the internal drive conected directly to a PC, a lot of exteral drive caddies have standard interface drives inside (IDE or SATA)

Control button locked. when I turn ooff PC the sleep light will not turn off.

Typically, the computer is defaulted to stay turned off after an electrical outage. To start the computer from scratch again, hold the power button in for several seconds. If it powers off, wait a minute, then hold the button in again to start it. When the screen comes up that says it didn't shut down properly, choose Safe Mode without networking. It will look like it is hanging on several files, normal, let it go. The screen & icons will be large because it is in default VGA mode. Once it stops loading, go to the Start Button & choose Restart. Things will return to your chosen default settings and most things will work again providing you have an EMI/RFI Surge Protector power strip that everything was plugged into. I have had several fail after a power surge, they are supposed to. Some have insurance should you have electrical damage after a power surge that got beyond the strip. Ultimately, $15-$50 is cheaper than your PC &/or monitors damaged by not having one, they are designed to be the Sacrificial Lamb & be the cheap breaking point.

As an added note, people confuse Sleep Mode with Hibernate Mode. Sleep mode means anything you are working on gets suspended into your available memory while it goes into Power Saving mode. On a power loss, all will be lost, save regularly if you use this mode.

Hibernate uses a space on your hard drive to write the information. Power loss, nothing is lost and on waking up or powering back on, your data will still be where you left off, usually intact. To restore from either mode without electrical loss, hit the ESC key. Exceptions will occur if you use Hibernate mode but only have a power strip for your multiple plugs. A power surge can still damage your computer because it wasn't blocked by the EMI/RFI power strip.

How do you know which one you have ? If you only have an On/Off power switch, you have an unprotected power strip. If you have a button on the side of that switch, known as a Reset Switch, you have a protecting one. Even if the Reset Button doesn't restore the power strip, it gave it's blife to protect your computer equipment. Cheap insurance.

Good luck.

Computer wont turn back on after power outage

Power surges are like Radiation poisoning: the effects are cumulative. You need to have it on a Surge Protector (not just a power strip with an over-amp cutout,) that is AT LEAST 1200 Joules. Much higher if you live in a lighting-prone area, or are subject to frequent power-outages. Your Power Supply Unit appears to be on the edge of failing. I suggest you get it replaced IMMEDIATELY. A PSU with issues such as yours have been known to damage one or more of the other components inside your PC when it finally dies.....like the Hard drive, or a Memory module...even the CPU.

Maxtor 6L16OMO hard drive says fail and I was just using it, is there anything I can do???

Are you able to boot into safe mode? When you turn on the computer just keep tapping "F8" until you see "start windows in Safe Mode" and others on a list..pick the first one "safe mode" and hit enter. If you are able to boot to this let us know. I've read other posts about the "code 7" and they all point to a dead hard drive, but we'll see...

We had a thunder storm a few days ago and that we lost power and that the pc shut down by it self so the next day we try to turn on the pc so it won't turn on please can you help us

Make sure that all the plugs are plugged in. Try a different outlet, if it's plugged into a surge protector make sure that it didn't trip. Or if is plugged into a regular power strip press the reset button on the side of the strip. If that doesn't work there usually is a fuse inside the PC that might have blown.

Audio would crackel then screen would scramble, now unit just beeps when poweredup.

Sounds like you are the victim of a power surge. If you do not have a surge protected outlet strip, get one before you fix the pc (or buy a new one). If you do have a protected strip, you should know that they are only good for one hit. If ever, in the past life of a protected strip, it is tripped off, that is, you had to reset it, the strip is no longer protected. It will work for an extension cord (if it wasn't hit to bad) but it no longer protects your stuff (and any warranty for your stuff is now void).

As far as the pc goes, its probably toast. You could crack it open and look at the motherboard, inspecting it for burn marks but the damage may be hidden inside the power supply or somewhere like that. If your set on saving your pc, you may be able to pull the hard-drive, mount it to a different pc set up, and boot from it, providing the hard drive is not damaged (ask a tech friend to help you if you go this route). You may then be able to pull any files off of it you want to keep. Then throw away the old drive, it can't be trusted.

External Hardisk Maxtor 4 One Touch not detected

Have you tried different USB cables with the drive? If the drive is self powered (no ext power supply) which I think that one is, then it needs a really good cable to draw the 5 volts from the USB port. If you have tried a known working cable, then it could be the USB controller or the disk itself. You can buy the USB box on eBay really cheap and move the drive over.

I had my maxtor one touch 4 750 gb external hard drive installed on a dell laptop with windows xp i plugged it into a mac and installed it but couldnt get it to work so i plugged it back into my laptop and...

Hi there, I think it may be to do with the format of the harddrive - see if you used the Maxtor in a Windows XP environment it would have been formatted to suit that OS.

Is the Harddrive formatted to NTFS?
