Thanks- that's a great idea but I also found a website that automatically checked my warranty and I had just a couple of days left under warranty...miracle actually...seems like it's always a few days after. So sent it back in but I will keep it in mind for the future. It was just a back-up drive so will just back up all the info again when I get it back. Thanks agin-

Have you change the fuse for the Maxtor unit, with a known to be good one.
Use a "meter" to see is there pwr coming from the adapter (or ask a friendly electrician to check for you)
However as a last resort If the drive caddy turns out to be blown & there is important data on the drive, it may be possible to have the case dismantiled, and the internal drive conected directly to a PC, a lot of exteral drive caddies have standard interface drives inside (IDE or SATA)

Why my dvd writer failed?

Check that the "data" and "power" connectors are securely attached.

It could have failed in several ways:
* an electric power-surge "fried" the circuit-board,
* the laser that "melts" the surface of DVD disks has burned-out (like a dead light-bulb).
* the motor that spins the media could have died.

We didnt have a surge protector on our tv we purchased from home shopping net. and lihtning came in the line and i guess hit our tv can it be fixed or is it worth fixing price wise i hate to throw it away...

Look at the power supply module, most of them will have a surge protection devices (called MOV, same as used in common surge power strip but cannot handle big surge that power strip can handle) installed to protect minor surge, it should blow the fuse. Once MOV blown, it will more likely stay short circuit, if you put the new fuse in it will blow the fuse right away. You need to see if the MOVs blew up any sign of blown up components.

Mistakenly plugged maxtor one touch 2 into wrong power adapter

Well Most Likely The Circuit Board Burnet Out Since Its 12V And When Plugged Into A 19V Supply It Will Burn Out Instantly Because It Over Charges The Circuits. So Its Not Possible To Repair Such Damage But You Can Take Out The Hard Drive And Plug IT Into A Desktop Computer And Use It At Home Or As An Online Hard Drive To Store Files

Maxtor One-Touch 4 750gb power light flashes and goes out straight away.

Try to remove the drive and connect it directly to another computer.
If still doesn't spin up then most likely the board has failed.

One hard drive failure mode is a power circuit short. Contact MAXTOR support on their web site for a possible warranty replacement. BTW, SEAGATE owns MAXTOR now.

Hard drive

It is possible, maybe. I've done similar and only blew a surface mounted diode on the drive's circuit board. I located a blown drive and took that diode from it, soldered it to the one I blew and it worked.

So yes, if you can do similar to what I've described above.
I have to tell you though, that's a longshot.
