Simpletech hard drive not working

Hi have a simple tech- simple drive model 96300-40001-001 w/c is 250 GB . i havent used it for a while maybe for about 6 mos and now it wont work. it lights up when power button is on but then my 2 laptops which i used it for before cant even detect nor recognize it.
help me pls. i need to transfer a magnitude of files so i can reformat my computer.

    HI

    I have exacly the same problem. I tried to take out the harddrive and installed it in my desktop computer, there it worked fine. It is the Simpledrive USB inteface card that is causing the problem, I can hear a strange clicking sound like the harddrive is being reset or so.

    I do not know if my problem is exactly the same, because I use my drive all the time and it was working perfectly fine. All of the sudden out of nowhere it is no longer recognized. It powers on (red light), but it does not work (blue light). It would be absolutely wonderful if someone could tell us how to fix this problem! My life is on this little machine!!!

    I have the smae problem with my model 96300-40001-001 w/c is 250 GB...Mine makes the clicking noise...
    Is there a way to reset the USB interface card???

    I tried to take the External HD apart and install it into my tower.
    Apparently the stripped down Simple Tech HD will not match up with my tower.

    Is there a way to transfer what I have the info off without having to take my computer shop?

    Just the same as above.

    My runs only through usb2.0 and for only a few minutes. I can get a few files here and there, but none of my larger ones-as I run out of time and my computer [and all computers I've attached] doesn't see it anymore. I've had this problem about a year back, and just stopped using it and it started working again- and now, yet again-Its failing. After the said process it sounds like it skips just as it goes out. I too have not seen my blue light flash in awhile either.

    And I can't find anything useful on the net about it. Not many people seem to own this particular product.


    I would like to resolve this while keeping the unit intact. Although I have already considered pulling it on running the IDE to straight to my computer I would prefer a better answer than this. However, to the rest of you. If you can't get it to work. I would suggest trying the same.

    I have a 1TB Simple Drive and starting today I can't get to to be recognized by any computer. It just doesn't show up.

I posted last year when I had this problem (Sept. '08 I think) and I just received an e-mail because when you guys posted today I got an e-mail that the topic updated. After my initail post I solved my problem, but I forgot to come back and post the solution, so here is what happened with mine...

This drive has a manufacturers default. If you don't use it for a while...if you detach it frequently...and/or when you reach a certain amount of space used it requires a certain power source to be used. There is no warning, and this is not stated anywhere, however I did contact the company directly. This problem occurs when the drive is not plugged into the main USB Port in the back/side of your machine. You cannot use a hub or external USB source for power. When you reach any one (or all) of the three points that trigger the drive to stop working the only thing that will enable the device to work properly again is for it to always be plugged into a main port. They are the only ports that have enough power to support the drive. This goes for laptops as well. When using a laptop, you cannot plug the drive into a mini hub, laptop riser, cooling fan, etc., it has to be one of the main ports or there will not be enough power to run the drive.

If your drive has already stopped working, all that is needed to enable it again is to properly shut down and disconnect it and your computer. Then reconnect and power up just like you would initialize it if it were new. As long as it is plugged into a main port you should have no problems. All your data should be fine and you should have no more problems.

Personally, I have had smooth sailing ever since we determined that this was the problem. I hope this helps some of you. Good Luck!!!

    Oh yeah...The clicking sound you hear is because the the interface card is trying to connect/power up. It can't because it isn't getting enough power. The default (that is what they call it - I call it a defect) causes that to happen.

I'm in the same boat as you with my Simple Drive, same Model number. Unfortunately there is not much you can do about it.. One day mine just didn't turn on, and it worked the day before. I attribute the failure to crappy chips made by ST Corp.
Your only hope is to use a data recovery company to get your data transferred, otherwise it is a paper weight now.
Can you confirm it contains a Seagate 7200.9 Serial ST3250824A?

It may be corrupt but since you opened the case of the hard drive, its no longer covered under warrenty. Sorry.

I have a simpletech 120 GB external USB hard drive with NO power supply. Do you know what the power rating is (ac or dc, how many volts, amperage...) or where I can get a new power supply for it? -Thanks


12VDC, 1.5A external power adapter Well that is what this page says, it's not your 120GB drive but unsure if it's no the same model maybe. However all external HDD that need a power supply should be needing 12 volts, as they are just internal drives mounted in a shell and some simple circuitry to power and connect it.

not all usb devices work on all machines
You need to find a driver or ask simple tech what the issue is i had the same issue with My WDC drive Western Digital gave me a driver after emailing them

Simpletech hard drive not working


I have that problem similiar to yours. My simple tech stopped working for like two years so i decided to open up my simple tech and removed my HD away from the old enclosure so I can try building my own external hard drive for the first time. I bought another new 3.5 enclosure, IDE/ATA for the old HD. I put it in the new enclosure and it worked!

It's the only solution you can have. No need to retrieve data or re-format your HD. You can leave it the way you like...if you wanna reformat it...up to you.

do you mean that you used this as a "Data" drive and do not have the data stored on your pc...

that is basically the same as having no backup... if it is important, store the data in more than one location.

it is possible that a power surge killed the usb adapter on your storage device.... you may be able to transplant the HDD onto a working adapter or USB->HDD bridge to get your data back
