What is vga/dvi cables

VGA and DVI is in the way the video signals travel. VGA connectors and cables carry analog signals while DVI can carry both analog and digital. DVI is newer and offers better, sharper display compared to VGA. You can easily tell them apart because VGA connectors (and ports) are blue while DVI connectors are white. Click the link below to see an image of them.

I would like to know what adapter (DVI to VGA Cable Adapter) I need to connect to a Macintosh G4. Thanks

Without knowing what Model Number of MAC G4 you're referring to, I can only give you generic information.

If your MAC G4 has a DVI port it is generally the female style.
The DVI connector on the adapter will need to be a male DVI style.

The VGA end of the adapter will be either male, or female. Most VGA connectors on a monitor cable have a male VGA end.

(The DVI end will have the pins sticking out on the adapter. The VGA end will have the socket holes)

Also stated as the monitor cable end will be a DVI male. The port {Connection} on the computer is a VGA female)

Example of a DVI male to VGA female adapter,

http://sewelldirect.com/dviaftovgam.asp

Barring that you need the other style of DVI to VGA adapter, (DVI female on the monitor cable, VGA male on the computer), this is an example,

[ Note* The newer VGA connectors are also known as an HD-15 connector.
More information on the Video Graphics Array connector,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VGA_connector

More information on the DVI connector styles, and the Digital Visual Interface technology,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_Visual_Interface

If you should find all of this confusing, simply state in a Comment as to what connector is on the end of the monitor cable, and what connector is at the computer.

State whether the connectors are Male (Pins sticking out), or Female (Socket holes)

Hi my laptop went in for repair and they said it cant be fixed as the vga isnt working? what is this and could it be solved

A Video Graphics Array (VGA) connector is a three-row 15-pin DE-15 connector. The 15-pin VGA connector is found on many video cards, computer monitors, and some high definition television sets. On laptop computers or other small devices, a mini-VGA port is sometimes used in place of the full-sized VGA connector.
DE-15 is also conventionally called RGB connector, D-sub 15, mini sub D15, mini D15, DB-15, HDB-15, HD-15 or HD15 (High Density, to distinguish it from the older and less flexible DE-9 connector used on older VGA cards, which has the same shell size but only two rows of pins).
VGA connectors and cables carry analog component RGBHV (red, green, blue, horizontal sync, vertical sync) video signals, and VESA Display Data Channel (VESA DDC) data. In the original version of DE-15 pinout, one pin was keyed and 4 pins carried Monitor ID bits which were rarely used; VESA DDC redefined some of these pins and replaced the key pin with +5 V DC power supply.

the only solution for that is to replace your vga.

Connectivity card from montior to CPU is different than other PCs, in back side of the monitor its showing to type VGA and other one DVi connector, In my CPU i dont have the slot for the DVi connector,...

DVI ==> Digital Video Input
If your monitor has both DVI and VGA inputs,
and your PC's video-card has both DVI and VGA outputs,
then buy a DVI-to-DVI cable, and use it, for a better picture.
If your monitor has both DVI and VGA inputs,
and your PC's video-card only has VGA output,
then use a VGA-to-VGA cable.
Or, purchase a video-card with DVI output,
to replace the video-card with VGA output,
and then use a DVI-to-DVI cable.

Hi,

I believe you are referring to a DVi connector. We have different types of connectors but none of them is DFi. We have VGA, HDMI, SATA, and DVi connectors. Here's a cheklist of what you need to do:
  1. Check the connector of the computer whether you have VGA, HDMI, SATA, or DVi
  2. Check the connector of the monitor whether you have VGA, HDMI, SATA, or DVi
  3. Now that you know the type of connectors you have for your system, you know what cable to buy.
It does not really matter if your computer and monitor have different connectors. We can purchase cables with VGA - VGA, HDMI - HDMI, DVi - DVi, VGA - HDMI, VGA - DVi, HDMI - DVi. So, don't worry and thank you for choosing FixYa!

Have hooked up Magnavox 19" tv as computer screen but don't have sound.

If the computer was connected to the Magnavox using the VGA connector you will not hear sound through the Magnavox, as the VGA connector is a video signal only. Unless you use the HDMI connector, which carries both video and audio, you may not have sound. Verify the back of the Magnavox to see if there are any audio inputs from the PC that may work alongside the VGA connection. Most televisions with a VGA connector do not have this feature as the VGA is strictly for video signal and not sound.

Princeton VL1715 startup problem

Have you disabled your onboard video in the BIOS? Boot your machine with the vga cord to the motherboard. You need to get into the BIOS. Depending on the make of your machine you need you will need to hit the del key, f2, or even f1. Go to the periphrial setup and disable your onboard video. Save the BIOS turnoff the computer and plug the monitor into you vga card. That should do it. To change it back to your motherboards vga just reverse the instructions. Let me know what happens.
