Remove the bottom covers and see if you can track the exact location of the hum. Hopefully the humming is coming from a moving component, ie CD drive, hard drive, fan,etc..., and not being created by a circuitry short. You might also try pulling the hard drive and see if that drive is making the noise. If you can't find it under the bottom covers, then try pulling the keyboard. Anyway, see if you can determine where it is and let me know.

Laptop making a high humming noise that comes and goes

It sounds as if your hard drive is starting to go, either that or your cooling fan. These would be the only two things I can think of that would cause a "humming" sound. I'm also guessing hard drive due to the fact that the drive spins until the program is loaded into your RAM then lets the RAM take over so it gets quiet again. Just a thought, it doesn't cost anything to open the bottom and listen closely. Good luck!

My Toshia a135 Laptop is not displaying the sound icon in the bottom right corner. I have Windows Vista. Can you please tell me how to display it?

Right click on any open area of your bottom taskbar, in the popup box click on "Properties".
On the next box that comes up click on "Customize".

You will then see a list of items that you can have displayed all the time on the right of your taskbar or
you can click on the bottom left box that will "Show All Icons and Notifications", best setup.

Make sure you click "OK", on the bottom right to apply the new settings.

Good Luck

Error code Stop: 0x0000007E

General Memory dump failure, least thats what I kinda get from the Error that you have displayed. This actually happens for quite a few reasons. Over heating, video graphics error, CPU failure (over heating), or something wrong with a prime system failure in a file. Most of time time on labtops it would be with the overheating, or not enough ram to run the processes that are active. Use Msconfig and under the startup tab turn off what you not need during start up. Also make sure you have the Labtop mounted and the legs are down, letting air access to the bottom of it to help with cooling. Also on the back and sides there should be exhaust vents, used compressed air to clean them out and make sure nothing is restricting them.

Compaq presario monitor has colored lines appearing at the bottom of the display ,even upon startup

It sounds like you have a faulty display, contact the place you brought it from (or cut out the middleman and contact compaq). These companys should replace the display for you (for free if it's still under warranty)

Humming noise on HP Pavilion dv9000

I have a dv6000 and its makes a insect tlike noise. i returned it and  got another one but that one also made the same noise. so i contacted hp and they told me that the sound is coming from the USB ports, i thought wierd but here is the solution to your problem. go to computer managment (start>right click my computer> manage), click on device manager, select the universal serial bus contollers ( there should be a few roots files that open up), right click a usb root hub and select properties, click the power managment tab, and uncheck "allow the computer to turn off this device to save power". do this for every USB root hub that you have, and the problem should go away. FYI these instructions are for windows XP.
