Thanks for commenting. My computer is current, USB ports are all 2.0. Recently, I had a second internal drive installed and 1GB memory. The system now has 2GB memory and 220GB storage between two internal drives Even after additions the backup drive worked. I did however, experience a brief problem with my system when not too long before this occurred my keyboard and mouse operated strangely. Every time I tried to perform a mouse or keyboard operation, everything I passed the cursor over or attempted with keyboard would highlight everything. Af ter letting this frustrate me for a few minutes, I rebooted and all was fine. I didn't immediately experience a problem with my backup until I actually attempted to locate a file on that drive. Sorry I didn't provide enough information. The backup drive worked for 6+ months then failed.

Try to plug in the usb device in the pport which is at the back of your system. This should work. If not then revert back.
Thanks

Seagate expansion 2tb

Cause:
This problem is caused by an issue with the Windows 7 Backup and Restore utility when using drives with 4K Logical sector sizes, which are found on WD 2.5 TB and larger external drives. This is different from an "Advanced Format" (AFD) drive which use 4K physical sector sizes. AFD drives should not cause this problem.

Solution:
It is still possible to use a 2.5 TB drive or larger with Windows 7 Backup and Restore, as long as you don't need to use the drive with Windows XP. Using the WD Quick Formatter tool, select the Factory Default configuration to reformat the drive.

Warning: This tool will erase all data on your drive, so take the necessary precautions.
After formatting the drive to Factory Default mode, the drive will be usable in Windows Vista and Windows 7. However, the drive will not be recognized in Windows XP. This is the only way to get Windows 7 Backup and Restore to work correctly.

Computer won't start; hard drive failure?

What version of Windows is that?
There are: Win XP Home, XP Media center, XP Professional... First time i hear 2002.
Best think for you to do is to backup your files and reformat your drive.
Because you can't access Windows safely, you should take your hdd to another PC.
I suspect on : MS Windows bug or hard drive error.

This issue may have occurred after one of the following situations:

  • You install or uninstall CD or DVD recording programs.
  • You uninstall Microsoft Digital Image.
You may see one of the following error messages:
  • One of the following error messages appears when you view the CD drive or the DVD drive in Device Manager.

Error message 1 The device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device (Code 31). Error message 2 A driver for this device was not required, and has been disabled (Code 32 or Code 31). Error message 3 Your registry might be corrupted. (Code 19)

Purchased Maxtor ONE TOUCH III. when I had XP. Now that I have Vista, mAXTOR DOESN'T RECOGNIZE IT. iS THERE AN UP-DATE? nEED HELP. Thanks Marty xmartico@san.rr.com

Hey xmartico,

If your recent update from Windows XP to Windows Vista has been the only major change to your computer system since you could access your Maxtor One Touch III last, you may simply need to reinstall the Maxtor software to resolve the problem.

Information provided by the manufacturer has suggested that if no password was ever set, the hard drive should work with Vista immediately with no additional work required. If you had chosen a password however, you may need to reinstall the software and reboot every time you disconnect/shut down the external drive, or disable your user account control (UAC). Please keep in mind though that disabling UAC is strongly discouraged, as it may open your computer to attacks by various malware programs including viruses and spyware.

If you're still not quite sure how to proceed, I would strongly recommend contacting Maxtor directly for further assistance.

Hope this helps you out.

Sincerely,
Aaron

Maxtor One Touch III

Download and run maxtor powermax, when you run the program it will idenify your hard drives, select your one touch and run the recertify, this will not erase anything but will run a complete diagnostic and attempt recovery of data to recertify as good. If the drive fails I have recovery software I can e-mail you.
