Lens error, restart camera

The lens can be repaired without having to replace it. It's probably misaligned gears inside. If you're out off warranty, there are third party place that fix them such as camera lens repair. There are also free camera repair guide website that show you how to replace the lens, the part is usually available on ebay.

I keep gettin lens error restart camera on my canon powershot sx100 and the lens wont retract. I have turned it on and off several times now. Is there anything i can do to get it working again?

Lens errors are fairly common. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension. Or the battery ran down with the lens extended ...

Here's some things that you can do to try to correct it. They only seem to work for less than 50% of the lens errors, but if the camera is out of warranty, they're worth a try:

"Lens error - restart camera" message, but won't restart

I just had the same issue when one of my children drop the camera. I'm not wanting to break anyone's camera but I was able to open the lens cover and pull the lens out and then turning it on it retracted and worked just like it should.

Canon PowerShot SX100 IS Lens Stuck

If the lens does not extend/retract when the camera is powered on, then lens assembly is damaged.

Unfortunately, such Canon SX100 (and the SX110 too) has a very fragile lens assembly, and it's damaged very easily. Most of the times the internal gears, the plastic post guides and the motor are damaged at the same time, so the only solution is to replace the whole lens assembly.

The lens replacement requires a qualified camera repair technician, unless you want to try in repair it yourself, which requires tools (scredrivers, soldering iron, desoldering tool, magnifier glass with light, etc).

Best regards,

LENS ERROR,RESTART CAMERA

Unfortunately this Canon SX100 (and the SX110 too) has a very fragile lens assembly. Once you have this lens error problem, there are only four solutions: 1) If it's under warranty, contact Canon to make it valid; 2) If not, then have a repair center to replace the lens assembly (either the internal lens motor or the gears are damaged) or, 3) Sell it for parts or 4) send it to the trash can.

Lens error, restart camera on Powershot SX100 IS

This is probably THE most common failure among digital cameras. There's a halfway chance of fixing it yourself, described here: http://camerarepair.blogspot.com/2007/12/fixing-lens-error-on-digital-camera.html
