Strange problem with istD and external flash AF240ft

I have a Pentax AF240FT flash that works properly with only some lenses. When used with my FA28, F35-70, and F50 the flash underexposes (it seems the flash fires at the same intensity all the time). When I use my DA16-45 or FA80-320 it works properly(haven't tried it with M lenses yet). Another thing is when the AF240 sees a focal lenth shorter than 35mm it flashes a yellow indicator to remind you to use the wide angle adapter, this light flashes with the DA16-45@<35mm but not when the FA28 is mounted.

Re: Strange problem with istD and external flash AF240ft

I have the same flash and I have only used it with my FAJ 18-35 and FA 24-90. Exposure seems to be darker with the FAJ 18-35 than with the FA 24-90 which is fairly good. When compared to the RTF, the exposure is also darker for both lenses but I would say the RTF overexposes than is correct. Regarding the coverage warning lamp, my 240 did lit up correctly with the 1.5X multiplying factor already taken into account by the camera, i.e., the 24-90 don't have the warning and with the 18-35, the warning lamp lit up when I zoomed near the 18mm. So, everything seems normal for my setup. Anyway, I shall try your mentioned lenses F 35-70 and DA 16-45 later on and see if these lenses exhibit the problems you described and will keep you informed.

Pentax istd built in flash goes off when taking picture but picture is underexposed but if I use a different flash in manual mode the camera works ok

What distance are the subjects when using the built-in flash?

The built-in flash is optimized for use between 0.7m (2.3ft) and 4m (13ft).

You could also try adjusting the ISO setting (higher ISO requires less light) or adjusting the EV value to a positive number to increase the exposure.

Camera won't turn on

Have you tried a new battery? If that doesn't work the main board may be fried. Take it to a service technician, preferably one who will give you a free estimate.

Why is my *ist DS eating my SD cards?!

I've used Sandisk Ultra II 512M cards, a PQI 1G and a Transcend 1G card (all high speed rated) in the *istDS. I've done about 1500 exposures now, many RAW, and have done several rounds of upload to my computer. No problems at all. These same cards work flawlessly in a Panasonic FZ10 as well. Either you have had a bit of bad luck, two defective SD cards in a row, or have a *istDS with a stuck or bad memory card controller. Try using the Reset command in the Set Up Menu, see if that helps. BTW, always format SD cards with the camera once before you start using them.

*istD pop-up flash problem

Not sure if you try fresh Alkaline battery. Try it if you havn't already. Fully charged batteries, how do you know it fully charged? The "charger said so"? Your batteries or charger might give you a fault peak reading. Try fresh battery or AC adepter and go from there.

Flash problem

That is normal operation, if poped up, the flash fires rapidily in low light to assist the auto focus, on a plain white wall, it can't focus, see the manual on AUto Focus limitations.

Exposure problem

I've found that the *istD underexposes ( as it should metering 18% grey ) light subjects, or with light backgrounds. A white wall using TTL ( AF500ftz ) behind any subject it always turns grey! You need to manually adjust 1 stop over. With dark subjects, overexposing with out blowing out much. If your used to the metering from a PS digi cam the *istD takes a bit of getting used to.
