Question about Refrigerators

Amana Refrigerator Not working. One repair guy said it is the low volt pc board; which is no longer in production. He is not 100% sure, but cant think of anything else. Other guy said it is the compressor which is leaking coolant and has low flow. Symptoms: lost cooling capacity, freezer completely defrosted, bottom back of freezer was iced over, alarm was sounding off.

You answered my question with this post. I really appreciate it and so does the elderly lady with the 8 year old Amana. You helped me convince her it was more worhtwhile to purchace a more energy efficient unit instead of throwing good money after bad with the old one.

Caution : Your Technician

If you have used the same technician for a while , and you are confident he will not " gouge " you , you are in great shape . However , finding a technician in this category , is extremely difficult .
For example : A tech comes to your house , and tells you " you have a freon leak and it should be recharged " . He puts a little ( maybe ) freon in , and charges you hundreds of dollars . First off , it is extremely ( ! ) rare , for a 2- any age refrigerator , to be low on freon ( except Amana , which is known for its' leak at the evaporator , where the copper connects to the aluminum coil ) . A while later , it still does not cool correctly , so you call him back . He comes back and says " OK , you now have a ** problem and it should be repaired , and you are still out the hundreds you paid previously .
I have yet to come across a refrig , from the factory , to be low on refrigerant ! I have found access valves , where a " tech " adjusted the refrigerant , still on the refrig , leaking . A good tech ALWAYS removes the access valve when finishing his/her work ! This avoids the possibility of a leak . If a refrigerator is low on refrigerant , it will stop cooling within the first year , which is a warranty repair . Not 5 - 10 years later ! Except Amana . Factories do not want their product to have problems , so , they do keep a close eye on the quality of their product ( such as leak testing , soldering quality , cosmetic looks , and any other issues demanded by the manufacturer , such as GE , whirlpool , Maytag , etc . ( not Amana ) .
Another problem , is the refrigerator control boards . Same thing . A tech , not familiar with the operation of the electronics , may tell you , you have a bad board , when he doesn't know how to check ( only that the control boards go out sometimes ) . He gets your money and a week later , same problem ! You do not get back the money you paid ( ! ) only maybe charged a slightly lower cost for repair ( different tech from same company who might be a little more knowledgeable on your product ) .
Another example is range control boards . Same situation . Replace board , pay lots of money , days later same problem , different tech finds different problem , pay a little more money .
A GOOD tech , will tell you " I am not familiar with this product " . He is the one you should try to keep , as what he is good at will be a substantial benefit to you . A bad tech , will just dig into the product , without knowing or being familiar with the operation , parts used , and their operation .
Be back later , to add or edit .

Cant find the fuse for the refrig. no power

Check connection for 12 volts, at back of fridge behind vent cover .(outside) Make sure 12 volts getting to the lugs where they join. If you have 12 volts to there, unplug fridge at receptacle usually on left side by back of fridge, just to be safe. Remove cover on circuit board and look for a blown (glass type fuse in there.)

Fridge and freezer stopped working.Power still on (light on in fridge). Digital control for fridge and freezer shows straight line no numbers. Any suggestions?

The double dashes in your display are for one of two reasons. First situation would be would be "you turned the unit off". Press the up arrow on the feezer or fresh food control until a 4 is in each display. Second, if the control is locked out, the board has been scrambled or failed possibly from a power surge. Unplug unit for 30 seconds, and plug it back in and try to set control's for "4". If controls are still locked out, the board (12868513) needs to be replaced.

Control board reset?

Amana version of adaptive defrost : Press refrigerator light switch five times in six seconds to initiate defrost cycle. Pressing five more times within six seconds will cancel defrost and go straight into the run mode. Similar operation on both bottom mount and SxS refrigerators. After the defrost terminator/thermostat opens, six minutes of dwell time occurs before the compressor and condenser fan motor will operate. After defrost terminator/thermostat open, 10 minutes of dwell time occurs before the evaporator fan motor will operate.

usually behind grille in front of unit. some of the newer units do have a small board in the refrigerator. there are plastic clips on the back of housing near the light bulb that can be easily pried out. if it is too hard to remove then that is not likely to be where it is.
