Question about GE Refrigerators

2 Answers

Our refrigerator is model 22,25; serial #JN92800472, purchased August 2006. We would like to know if the dust collector in the back can be cleaned by the owner. We would appreciate information not found in the manual.

The "dust collector" or jelly roll condenser is considered a "never clean" condenser and will perform satisfactorily even when completely plugged. This is not to say it wouldn't be more efficient if it were cleaner. Removing the back metal cover allows access to the back side of the condenser, but it is difficult to clean the front side.

I just purchased a whirlpool side by side fridge, the salesman could not answer my question, I wanted to know if these have self cleaning condensor's on them

Good day,
There is no such thing as a self cleaning condenser.
The condenser is the black coil assembly, located at the very bottom of the refrigerator.
It is a great dirt and dust collector and must be cleaned on a regular basis, once or twice a year by hand, using a vacuum cleaner with a crevice tool attachment or by blowing out with a tank and hose of compressed air.
The second procedure is by far the better, but also messy.

Ice collecting on floor of freezer and water dripping inside frig

Most likely you have a blockage in the defrost drain that begins behind the rear panel in back of the freezer and ends up in a pan beneath the refrigerator were a fan blows warm air over the water to put it back into the air inside your home. You need to unplug the refrigerator and remove the back panel inside the freezer and look at the condensate collector tray at bottom of the evaporator coil. Sometimes its ice blocking the hole because temperatures are too cold for the liquid to drain and it freezes before leaving the freezer and sometimes the line is blocked beyond the tray. Examine first and melt the ice and pour a warm solution of clorox and water in the pan and check if the amount ended up in the pan below the refrigerator. Sometimes a wet vacuum cleaner will help get what ever dislodged from the drain and sometimes we need to install something to warm the hole as the defrost takes place. But cleaning the drain is the best solution for now..Sea Breeze

The refrigerator is not getting very cold and it constantly is running. The refrigerator is about five years old. Model 253.60722000 serial wa52801393

Is there frost in freezer and cold in freezer and warm in fresh food compartment. Can you turn the thermostat down and cause the refrigerator to stop completely? I want you to look on back of refrigerator and remove lower cover to expose the compressor and defrost timer. Turn timer clock wise until you hear the refrigerator turn of and inside the lites should remain on. Also check the coils below while there to see if covered with dust. If so, clean while unplugged. your model has a lot of things to check so let me know what I missed asking you and some thing that you noticed while checking in the order give answers back to me. Let me know soon so we can get you running. I have all the info on your model, photos part ans numbers and ready to get started. Thanks, Sea Breeze

Check the freezer fan.
Is it running?
If not, replace fan motor.
Check the damper doors in the fresh food side.
Does air flow through?

Avanti EC15W-2 Thermoelectric - stopped cooling. Purchased on August 3, 2006.  Has always been quiet. Still is, but I can hear that something's running if I put my ear to it. Light works.  Any suggestions?...

I think the circuit board is nothing more than a power supply converting the 120 volts ac to dc. If that goes then there is no way for the solid state device to cool,
Is there dust under the back cover? Is there frost/ice build up in the fridge fan compartment. I suggest to unplug for a day and try again. Hope this helps.

LOCK BUTTON ON

I think on this model you hold the lock button down until the light blinks off, about 3-5 seconds. If it locks by itself when you open and close the door it may be within the serial number range that had a recall on the dispenser board. Most of these were upgraded about two years ago but I still run into a few that were missed occasionally. If it is one of these units, as far as I know the recall is still open and it would be repaired free of charge. The most likely thing is that some one held the lock button down without realizing it though.
