Restoring SD Card from ActiveSync Backup

I have a 1GB SD Card that was functioning fine. This morning the card showed corrupted and asked to reformat. I foolishly allowed the reformat thinking my files were backed up. I perform a continuos backup each time my PDA conncects to laptop. I also perform full backups. The last full backup was 10 days ago. After backing up No SD Card File! Can I restore my SD Card files?

I am fairly sure that you are out of luck. The Active Sync backup does not backup SD card data.

SOURCE: Restoring SD Card from ActiveSync Backup

If you didn't backup the sd card contents into the pc then no, but if you did then its a yes.

I myself take a full copy of the contents of my sd cards now and then into my desktop computer, and incase a problem happens I can restore the files.

You can try a file recovery program like file scavenger.
http://www.quetek.com/prod02.htm TRY THE FREE DEMO FIRST don't buy the program unless it can recover your files.

I own the program myself and its great but try it first.

Format itself doesn't delete any files it only marks it as free space.

Overcoming with SD card "write error"

SD cards are flash memory devices which allow a user to store huge amount of data. Being reliable and durable, these cards have become the hot choice to store data and are used in various host devices like digital camera, PDAs, video game consoles, MP3 players etc. Despite so many advantages, these cards are also prone to errors. Most of these errors occur due to reasons like interruption in read/write process, virus attacks or file system corruption. While some SD card errors can be dealt by cleaning the contacts of the card and re-inserting it, others can be rectified by formatting the card. After formatting, the SD card data can be retrieved by using either a valid backup or SD card recovery software.

Consider a situation, you have taken your family to an exotic locale and while clicking pictures through your digital camera (which is using a SD card) you witness an error on its LCD screen:

“Write error”
The above error is not rare in case of SD cards. The moment the error erupts, the data stored on the SD card becomes inaccessible. Moreover, the SD card becomes useless as you can't even store new data on it.

Cause

The above error which rendered the SD card ineffectual can be accounted to corruption. The other reason can be relatively less memory space to accommodate new data.

Resolution
In order to rectify 'write error', you can try the following possible techniques:
  • Turn the camera off, re-insert the card and then turn it on again
  • If you are still not able to access the data, connect the camera to a computer
  • You can use a card reader to access the SD card data
  • In grim situations where nothing of the above works, format the SD card and restore the data using a backup

After formatting, the SD card becomes functional and can perform read/write operation. If a backup of the data is corrupted or invalid, you can rely on a SD card recovery software. A SD card recovery tool employs improved scanning algorithms to extract data in the event of corruption.

Stellar Phoenix Photo Recovery, a well-known SD card recovery tool, is designed to recover lost/formatted/deleted multimedia files from a variety of memory cards like SD, SDHC, XD, MMC, CF etc. The easy-to-use tool is available in two versions, one each for Windows and Mac operating system.

My camera wont let me use an sd card

There have been two other posts in this camera's forum about this problem, you could've saved yourself a lot of trouble by reading through the other posts.
This camera only supports an SD card of 1GB maximum. The specifications on page 25 of the User's Manual state that only SD cards between 8MB and 1GB in size can be used in this camera. When I tried a larger-capacity 2GB SD card in this camera it reported that the card needed to be formatted even though the SD card worked fine in my desktop PC's SD card slot. Verify that the capacity of the SD card you're trying to use is 1GB or less.

Why dose my tom tom stop on a test run half way through the journey

When on test or demo , the tomtom runs on a demo menue list loaded onto the sd card. if the data file on this list is corrupted the tomtom will only complete the demo journey up to the corrupted point in the list. I would suggest that you reload your backup onto your SD card . ( Hopefully you did make a backup to your PC ? ). Other than that , you could try contacting tomtom and ask them which file you need to replace on your SD card in order to replace the corrupted file. You could then either download it from tomtom website or copy it from someone elses tomtom SD card.

Data erased from iPAQ hx4700

If an ipaq loses power , then all data in RAM is lost. It's important to keep it charged. It's also important to do regular backups..... so there are two backup options - one is thru Activesync which will backup to your PC and one is the IPAQ's own backup program which will backup to the IPAQ FILE STORE (area in ROM) or a SD card. I do the Activesync backup every time I sync and then the IPAQ backup about once a week or immediately before a system change. Activesync backup ------------------------ Here is a guide which best explains it http://www.cewindows.net/faqs/activesync/backup.htm this guide suggests doing a full backup, but it's fine to do an incremental backup each sync - this means that only changes will be added to your backup and makes the whole process much quicker. IPAQ Backup ----------------- So under Programs is a program called IPAQ Backup. The default location is IPAQ FILE STORE which is an area in ROM and is not lost thru a power failure nor hard reset. You may also choos to backup to a SD card - a full backup will need roughly 20MB. So in this backup procedure, if you click on 'Browse' you can choose a SD card. A restore can then be performed from the IPAQ FILE STORE or SD card (depending on which location you chose) and so if you are away from your PC, this will be no problem. A restore this way , rather than thru Activesync is also much quicker, so if you have a choice go this route.
