Free unsecured wireless internet in my hotel but my ps3 can't connect. it says it successfully obtains an ip address but then says internet connection failed. what can I do to fix this?

Incase Open networks are configured for MAC authentication(MAC binding) then you might not be able to connect to those networks. Even though Network is Open (Unsecured), if ACL (Access Control List) is enabled on the network then only those computers can connect whose MAC address is configured for that Network, its another Security feature on Routers.

Try connecting to some network which your are sure are Open (Unsecured)

I'm staying in a hotel and have free wi-fi and wired internet but I can not seem to get online. During the connection test the "obtain IP address" step is successful, however the next step "internet connection" fails. This is an unsecured network and does not require any wpa keys , and I don't think it requires an SSID. I had no trouble connecting my laptop.

You must ensure that you have enabled the router as a DHCP server and the client PC network connection is set up to "obtain an IP address automatically". If the computer is not obtaining a valid IP address from the DHCP server (i.e. the router) you will get the limited or no connectivity error. You can easily check to see if you have a good IP address by opening a CMD prompt window and running ipconfig.exe. Generally, the WBR-1310 will have assigned an IP address like 192.168.0.xxx. If you have an IP address like 169.254.xxx.xxx you router is not assigning your computer a valid IP address. Powering down the PC and/or the router will usually fix this, but not always. There are other, more compliated, steps that can resolve the problem if the above steps do not work.

go into ur wireless network properties.click internet protocol.check settings .if obtain ip auto is checked.connect to the unsecured network to obtain details..ip,gateway , dns etc.
disconnect go back to wireless properties and select use the following ip/dns in internet protocol and type in the details..this will get u connected..once connected left click on connected icon in sys tray and select repair this should make changes to ip and dns..it may change it may not ..if not it doesnt need to.

sounds to me like you have the security turned on . Just type in your security key on PS3 and it should connect. Best of luck!

click on Start -> Control Panel -> Network Connections -> Wireless Network Connections -> Properties -> In the box in the middle scroll to and click on "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" -> Click Properties -> Make sure "Obtain an IP Address Automaticaly" is Ticked -> make sure "obtain dns address automatically" is Ticked. -> ok -> click ok

See if you can connect

Click on Start -> Run -> Type CMD and hit enter.
a command box will open. type in IPCONFIG/ALL

Please copy down the following numbers ---
IP Address
Subnet Mask
Default Gateway
DNS Servers

Please make sure you copy them correctly and post them here.

Sometimes they set the wireless to be unsecured. But you have to pay to use them.
Please check with the hotel staff about setting it to use.
If its completely free, double click the network icon on the task bar, click support tab and click repair.

Let me know the settings of your Router if needed IP address?
Yes - add your IP address into Network Connection.
No - obtained the setting in your Network Connection.

How to Add or Obtained the setting s of your IP address:
- goto Control Panel
- Double Click Network Connection
- Rigth Click then Properties the Local Area Connection
- Select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and select Properties
- Under General Tab they have choices to add or obtained settings.

1. Make sure that wireless settings are properly synchronized.
>> ssid/security key.
2. Check your computers wireless connection status
> Make sure that it is set to "obtain ip address automatically)
3. If still not working if computer is set to obtain ip automatically, try assigning static ip on wireless pc
> You need to know your router's ip address and dns
4. Disable firewall on wireless pc.

If you clicked repair connection at anytime, you need to reset the router, by way of a reset button on the rear or front, go to your wired network card properties in control panel>network connections, click TCP/IP line, click properties again and select obtain ip address automatically. At this point you can run the setup wizard again if you wish using the rj45 cable You should set up the router using an RJ45 lan cable which comes with the unit and get into the routers settings by typing it's ip address in your web browser 192.168.0.1. Check that DHCP is set at enabled to give your pc's an automatic ip address. Check that wireless is also enabled and save any changed settings. Go to the properties of your pc's wireless adapter in control panel network connections and on its TCP/IP line check that obtain ip address automatically is ticked. when you have set up your wireless connection and the router is set up correctly, disconnect the rj45 cable and if neccassary dissable the wired network card so as the router looks for your wireless adapter and gives it an ip address. When a connection is found by your wireless connection you need to go into the router again and set up your wireless security, using whatever method you choose eg WEP or WPA PSK. You need to select the numbers and letters mixture pass phrase that you use for encyption and use the same numbers in the wireless adapter when it asks for the passkey no., you should then be able to connect again securely.
