Question about LaCie PC Desktops

My lacie Big disk 500GB drive will not mount even though it shows in Disk utility (unmounted) and in System profiler. When I run Verify Disk in Disk utility it says: ERROR: The underlying task reported failure on exit. Any suggestions? Cheers Charlie

Try rebooting and hold down the option key, you should then be able to select the Mac partition.

If not, then put your Tiger DVD install disk in, and reboot holding
down the c key, do not do the install ! but run Disk Utility from the
    Menu bar...run Disk Repair.

If you try to repair a disk that cannot be unmounted, the repair will appear to start, but then stop as Disk Utility displays this message: "Repairing disk failed with error. Could not unmount disk."

If you look in the Console (/Applications/Utilities/), you will see an entry like this:

    Verify and Repair disk “Storage”

The disk “Storage” could not be unmounted

Could not unmount disk for verification

Repairing disk failed with error. Could not unmount disk
In some rare situations, your computer might not respond for several seconds.

If you cannot determine which files are open on the disk that you
want to verify or repair, restart your computer and then mount the disk
again, or start up from your Mac OS X Install DVD or CD to repair.

Try first unplugging power, if it does not work try uninstalling and reinstalling disk utility

Try first unplugging power from computer and Lacie disk for ten minutes, if the computer is a laptop or a Mac notebook, then also remove the battery at same times.

If it does not work then try uninstalling and reinstalling disk utilit, Check if your lacie is displayed as external disk in your computer resources. If you are using Windows XP, for example, check if you have a new external disk in My Computer, in this case the problem is only with Lacie software, as the computer is seeing the disk.

If the disk is accessed through a network also disable all firewall software to test the disk.

If you have a different computer test also the Lacie on the other computer, to see if the external hard drive is faulty.

Hi, when Lacie does a kind of tickling noise and it does not start, that means the disk is faulty. Testing it on a different computers also confirmed the diagnosys.
When this happens you can fix it only by replacing the internal hard drive, all data inside are usually lost or recovered at an high price from specialised data recovery companies.
The disk can be fixed for a not too high fee at any computer shop.
If you just bought the disk take it back to seller.
If disk is less then one year old contact Lacie to check if you can validate your guaranty, you find number on booklet that came with hard drive, or on Lacie website here.:

Dell dimension e310 desktop error message unmountable boot volu me

> unmountable

The disk-drive cannot be "mounted", i.e., the motherboard cannot access it

> boot volume

To "boot" a computer is to load a small "loader" program from the disk-drive;
that program "pulls-up-by-the-boot-straps", to read the rest of Windows from the disk-drive.

If the disk-drive has "failed", then you'll get messages like the one that you reported.

Replace the disk-drive.
