Harman Kardon AVR20 II Receiver Low Sound Level

My receiver is hooked up but the sound level when master volume is turned all the way up is very low. I can run the TST and the sound level comes through the speakers at very good strength. When I run the Tuner or DVD through the speakers the sound is very muted. I can hear the channel clearly, but the sound level is way too low.

This solution was 100% spot on. The Tape Monitor Switch was indeed on, and once I turned it off the receiver worked perfectly.

Thank you very, very much. You are awesome.

    Regards, Tim.

This may sound silly, but please verify that the tape monitor switch in not engaged. The TST mode bypasses that section of the receiver. This is the most common cause. Since the TST signal is the correct volume, the output amp section is working correctly. One other possibility is the tone circuit having a problem, but lets verify the simple stuff first. I'll look up the tnoe circuit section in the meantime. Please update this when you can with your results.

Why aren't you looking at the sub for the reason? It may have the crossover set too high.

If the sub is loud enough during level setting, look at receiver settings, otherwise it's the sub amp.

Voice of both left and righ speaker is not equal

Can say I've seen this on a H/K. First swap the speakers left to right and right to left if the sound is low on the same speaker its the speaker not the receiver (could have a driver out). Could also be a dirty output relay.

Is the sound good other than it being low?
Is it that way with all inputs?

My harmon kardon hk 3475 has very poor sound, almost none at all. it does this through all inputs. if i hook up through the line input it sounds ok but i have to use the volume control on my mp3 to turn up...

Poor sound or low volume?

Sudden onset or always like this?

When you say this, "if i hook up through the line input it sounds ok ", what exactly do you mean? What alternatives are you using to Line Level inputs. All inputs except Phono are Line Level.

How does FM sound?

How is the MP3 player different than anything else, hook-up-wise? Do you have it jacked into the Main In? That would bypass all signal processing and selection in the receiver.

There should be jumpers between Pre Out and Main In. Are they there when you DON'T have the MP3 player plugged in there? If not, install a short pair of RCA cables between them.

Describe what is hooked to what in detail. Have you checked to make sure the Mute and Tape Monitor (T-Mon) are NOT active?

Ipod to harman/kardon

Using a headphone to RCA adaptor plug the headphone jack into the headphone connector of the Ipod. Then plug the RCA jacks into any available Analogue input on the receiver. Increase the volume on the Ipod to 80% then adjust the receiver's volume according.

Or get a dock that will allow remote control and charging, such as Roth, DLO or Wadia.

Harman Kardon AVR 230 Receiver Volume

You are overdriving the amp, they were never meant to be played at that volume despite the fact they will go to that level. Your only hope is to buy more efficient speakers or a stronger amp.

Avr 35 volume control

Are you using the two small silver touch + and - controls that are set close to the bottom of one sound stick? They are very discrete and easily missed. (I did at first.)
