First, opening attachments from unknown sources is a bad idea. Assuming you know where they are from and what they should be, then you have an identity crisis! Problem is that your definitions for your file types may be incorrect. This is not an easy one to correct. I'll need to know what version of Windows you have and what email program you are using.

Why do my database files open up in notepad whenever I click it, is this normal? help please...

You have notepad set as your default text reader. If you have Word installed use that as your default. So go in set up your default programs you can do this by going to setup default programs in the start menu when you get there look for your default programs for .doc files etc and set it to open up using Word or whatever Word program you have other than notepad. It will not harm your computer if you open .doc or .txt files using notepad.

If you want a free Word Document for Office files or for writing purposes go to Open Office it is a free word processor Click Here, that does not cost anything and will even open most Microsoft Office documents as well. Thanks for using FixYa! John

Tip

Useful Notepad Trick !

This is real cool for people who use notepad to write down any info on a day to day basis.

Open a blank Notepad file

* Write .LOG as the first line of the file, press enter.

* Save the file and close it.

* Double-click the file to open it and notice that Notepad appends the current date and time to the end of the file and places the cursor on the line after.

* Type your notes and then save and close the file.

Each time you open the file, Notepad repeats the process, appending the time and date to the end of the file and placing the cursor below it.

I try to sign on to face Book but it always goes To monster.com. What gives here

The simplest solution for this problem is to check your hosts file.

1. Open windows explorer
2. Browse to c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc
3. Open the file named hosts with Notepad by right-clicking the file and
click open with...
4. Check for an entry that may look like this (could be different):

63.112.169.1 www.facebook.com

5. That IP is the ip address for monster.com. Just throw a # in front of
the line or delete that line, then save the file.
6. Try opening facebook now.

If that does not work, you are probably infected with spyware or malware. Go to http://onecare.live.com/ and use the online scanner to clean your PC.

Winmail to Outlook express 6

Outlook Express does not display any message attachments if TNEF-encoded file (winmail.dat) was received. If you are expecting some attachment, but do not see any, it still can be there.

To decode such a message perform the following steps:
  1. Save the whole e-mail message to an *.EML file via File, Save As, or Drag-and-drop.
  2. Open the *.EML file in a text editor such as Wordpad or Notepad.
  3. Locate the line Content-Type: application/ms-tnef;, and change the Content subtype to something else, such as Content-Type: application/zzz;
  4. Locate the line name="winmail.dat" and change to name="winmail.tnf". You may change the winmail part as well, if desired.
  5. Save the *.EML file from the text editor.
  6. Double click the *.EML file from the Windows File Explorer. This will open the message in a mail window and the TNEF attachment should now be available for saving.
  7. Drag the saved attachment into the Winmail Opener program. Decoded attachments will then be there and can be dragged or opened.

Add Background Sound to an Email in Outlook

To add background sound to an email in Outlook:

  • Create a new message using HTML formatting in Outlook.
  • Download the following file to your Desktop: zbgsound.htm.
  • Start Notepad.
  • Open the zbgsound.htm file you just downloaded in Notepad.
  • Replace ###path to background sound file### with the path to the desired background sound file.
    • The line could read <img src="C:\Documents and Settings\lsdoe\My Documents\My Music\lsdoem.mid" id="bgsound", for example.
  • Select File | Save from the menu.
  • In the Outlook message, select Insert | File... from the menu.
  • Go to your Desktop.
  • Highlight zbgsound.htm.
  • Click on the right down arrow of the Insert button.
  • Select Insert as Text.
  • Continue editing your message.

I hop that helped, it looks complicated buts its not. Basically if you know how html works your email allows html you just put the html code for teh music in it.

Good luck,
Cam
