Question about SimpleTech SimpleDrive Pininfarina 320GB External USB 2.0 Hard Drive - Blue

Simple-Tech Pininfarina 380GB Failure

This is my second drive in less than a year. The first one failed approx 3 mos after purchase, and was replaced under warranty. Now, the second one has apparently failed. Although it powers up ok, it is no longer recognized by my WinXP computer. It also is VERY warm to the touch.

It had been working fine through a USB hub. Removing the hub and plugging the drive directly into the computer does not have any affect on access.

It still shows up in the device manager and is reported to be operating correctly, but does not show up as a drive in "My Computer."

One other external drive - another brand, and several years old - continues to work fine through the hub.

Based on my readings of the post here it appears that SimpleTech, at least as far as this particular model of drive is concerned, is selling a product with a short service life.

    I have the same problem. Has anyone tried to go to an computer tech company to have them try to extract the files to a disc?

oped it, maybe loose cables or connections. or the worst case, a faulty hd. ticking sound means bad drive, cannot read disks. retrieve data? the better chance will be a recover technician, dont try anything else, will turn a worst problem.

If your version of windows dosn't have the driver, there is that possibility that your drive is not supported.

Two things I want you to do ... check the Microsoft Hardware compatability list at http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/hcl/default.mspx

Visit the simpletec web site ... http://www.simpletech.com/support/ and see if they offer something.

If your device is not on the windows compatability list you are probably out of luck unless the manufacturer offers something for it.

I have presumed you are running windows ... since you dont say otherwise.

Hi,

This generally means you have a hardware failure in the drive or enclosure. The simplest way to test which is to have a hardware tech move the drive into a new enclosure and see if it works.

This will void your warranty if you do it, so, if the drive is under warranty and there are no files you consider valuable on the drive, call the manufacturer for warranty support.

If you value the data more than the drive is worth then take it to your local hardware vendor and ask them to test the hard drive in a new enclosure. Good odds it will work this way but if not you may need the help of a data recovery specialist.

In North America I use Armor-IT, if you are in a different region and the new enclosure fails to garner results, comment back with your region(Country, State, City) and I will supply you with the closest reputable facility.

Try to hook it up to another computer and see if it works there. This will tell you if the device is failing. If you have found that it failed please see about replacing the power adapter. If still no live the device has failed and needs replacement.

Hello.
It sounds like you might have a problem with the power supply.
I have seen MANY external hard drives with failing power supplies. Take it to the store you purchased it from for a check up, it should still be under warrantee if its only 3 months old.

Simple Tech SP U25/60 external hard drive


Almost nothing is supported on Win 2000 because it had shuch a short life span. most new tech made in the last 2-3 years only runs onXP or Vista. Every once in a while some will work back to 98.

p.s. did it say it was compatable with 2000? look on the box

Most likely the drive has bad sectors. You should get it replaced it and don't store any valuable data on it.
